Believe it or not, when Thunder Beach rolls back into Panama City Beach April 29th, the bikes will be heading in a brand new direction – up to the Bay Point Marriott Golf Resort & Spa. The new venue comes as a surprise to some as Bay Point is, by definition, a quiet, elegant community best known for its exclusivity and seclusion. Other Thunder Beach venue locations are consistent with previous years and include Frank Brown Park, the Shoppes at Edgewater, Club La Vela, Sharky’s Restaurant & Tiki Bar, and Pineapple Willy’s, but Bay Point will indeed this year replace the Boardwalk Resort as the sixth venue.
So why Bay Point? Thunderbeachproductions.com says on their website “Given the extensive road construction going on for the next 1 1/2 years directly in front of the Boardwalk Beach Resort, and with no way of knowing the condition of the road during the Spring Rally, Thunder Beach Productions informed Boardwalk’s management that we would not place vendors there, for at least the next four events. Even though the Boardwalk’s management understood our liability concerns regarding riders’ safety and access to vendors, they chose to place vendors there without the consent/approval of, or even notification to, Thunder Beach. Because of the Boardwalk’s complete disregard for these concerns, Thunder Beach Productions will not advertise or support in any way the Boardwalk Beach Resort and any activities held there. Thunder Beach has chosen, instead, to move our venue to the Bay Point Marriott Resort.”
So how is this news being received? After speaking to several Bay Point business owners, the general feeling from that perspective was definitely not a positive one. But perhaps you are a biker or Thunder Beach fan excited to experience the new venue? Or maybe a Bay Point resident with an opinion you would like to share? One thing is for certain though, Thunder Beach is almost here once again – the event starts on Thursday, April 29th and ends on Sunday, May 2nd. As a Bay Point resident I am NOT happy to just now hear about this event taking place right “outside” of our neighborhood. Thank heavens we’d already planned a trip out of town that weekend! I hate to think how messed up that weekend will be for something as simple as just getting home, enjoying the normal peace & quiet, playing golf, etc!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A STUPID IDEA to hold this within a residential neighborhood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aren’t Pineapple Willy’s and Shores of Panama both Thunder Beach Venues on the very same stretch of road just down from Boardwalk? I guess the promoter and Thunder Beach Productions liability concerns for riders safety come with exceptions.. The Promoters action speaks so clearly we can’t hear what propaganda he’s saying.

Too “stuck up,” Carolee? Yea right…why not have 500 motorcycles cruising by your quiet neighborhood for 4 or 5 days straight? Biker fan or not, you know you would complain. Its just a bad idea. I am all for the Marriott trying to make a buck, but when you share land with such a large neighborhood that people moved into because it’s a quiet place to live is just dumb.

Considering that not all bikers are respectful of others (it only takes a few to ruin it for all) I think Bay Point is a really bad idea. Why not Frank Brown Park? Did I miss something in the article about why the rally could not be held there? Will it be a bit inconvenient for those who use the park? Yes, but there is a large enough area and an alternate entrance that it really doesn’t seem as though it would disrupt the locals who go there for the day to day activities. But I could be wrong. If someone could please tell me why the park isn’t being used I’d appreciate it.

I live right next to Frank Brown Park in Palmetto Trace. Thunder Beach has been there twice since I have live there. To be totally honest I did not mind at all. I think it is a great location! Right next to Pier Park for one. All of the bikers I have ever enountered have been very nice and expecially respectful of our town. I think we should welcome them and be glad that people from all over want to visit our beautiful town.

Nothing against Bay Point, it has it’s image and place in the sun.
Sometimes things, groups, places or timing are just not a good fit. This is one of those times when it doesn’t seem like a good fit. We’ll know in the weeks that follow I’m sure. Successes and fiasco’s have a way of being trumpeted in the media. I doubt either side will miss this opportunity to sound off.

So now just because we bikers come to your town to take some time off we are refered to as scum. I’ve been to maybe 8 different Thunder Beach’s and have never even seen anyone get really stupid. Your town makes millions of dollars and it helps a lot of people get by in these tough economic times. My wife and I love your town and the people. While I am both a biker and a Bay Point resident, I can honestly say, this is a terrible idea. I do not agree with the image that some of you are trying to portray on the biker community as drunks and roughnecks. And I also do not agree with the image that some of you are trying to portray of Bay Point residents as “stuck up”. Take “Bay Point” out of the article and insert the name of any quiet, private, residential neighborhood you wish… Mixing the two is a bad idea. Have we given any thought to the people who have travelled hundreds of miles to play our beautiful golf courses? I hope those golfers are not staying at the Marriott this weekend, that will be an interesting blend… What exactly does the Marriott have to offer the biker crowd? Are they going to “belly up the bar” at Kingfish? Bring your checkbook fellas…
My biggest concern is the safety issue getting from Thomas Dr. to the Marriott. That is a dangerous road and has a history of serious accidents at the infamous curve in the road. The poor guy who lives in that house has rebuilt his fence 3 times in the last 3 years because of cars losing control and sliding into his yard. There was a fatality of one of our residents there less than a year ago. Now lets force thousands of bikes onto an already busy road, mix a little alcohol…
Can anyone give me one good reason this is a GOOD idea? The bikers will be shunned and the residents will be angry… Who’s idea was this?

I agree completely! My boyfriend and I are full time residents in PCB and own a motorcycle.
We truly enjoy all the rallys when Thunder Beach is here but…to have all that traffic and noise in any gated community like Bay Point is ridiculous. These events should never be located in a residential community anywhere. I would have a complete fit if this had been decided to be in my community. Let’s find out who made this final decision and ask them why, (if they don’t live in Bay Point), why didn’t they schedule it for their neighborhood?
This I believe will prove to be a very bad idea especially due to all the noise that all those bikes are going to make and what about getting in and out of Bay Point’s guard gate???

I find it funny that Thunder Beach gets kicked out of Boardwalk and now they try to make it as though it was for the bikers safety. Truth is they lost it because they couldn’t live up to their contract. (that Thunder Beach wrote by the way) So now they tell everyone that Boardwalk isn’t having a venue. That just isn’t the case. Thunder Beach Productions will not have a venue at the Boardwalk for the bike rally. Maybe that is why Thunder Beach Productions isn’t the only game in town now???? They are moving to Bay Point because they have to not because they want to. Anyone who doubts it just pick up the latest issue of Full Throttle magazine page 36.

I too am a local and a biker of 22 years and I have to agree that this is not only a ridiculous idea, but part of an underhanded way to intimidate any and all that disagree with the blackball mentality of Thunder Beach. After riding in this rally since its inception with my late friend Garry Hundly, I have been privy to alot of the behind the scenes drama that this promoter surrounds himself with. The way the he is trying to turn this around on someone else is how he has operated for years. I know many people that have worked with him and for him over the years and its amazing how nothing is ever his fault. He is always the victim and never does anything to deserve the actions against him. The guy is definitely a legend in his own mind.

Wow, good article Donnie. I’ve attended Thunder Beach many times & plan on being there in less than a week for this one. I didn’t even know this Bay Point existed until this article but if it is a quiet, residential area like most of you have said then I think making it a venue is a mistake. The promoter is going make even more enemies of the rally. I’m afraid that politics could ruin a good thing.

Well, I’m fairly new to PC and VERY new to Bay Point, but for what it’s worth…
I have nothing at all against bikers, and to be honest I’d love to have a couple of Hogs in the garage myself one day (said garage being in Bay Point). But having said that, having a rally event such as this as Bay Point or ANY similar community, well that makes about as much sense as a screen door on a submarine. As someone previously stated, I agree that it’s just “not a good fit”. Not that it bothers me personally, but it just doesn’t make much sense to me. And I’d likely have the same opinion even if I had a bike of my own and participating in/attending the event. When I first heard about this whole thing, my first reaction was simply “Huh? Really? Why on earth would they do THAT?”

Now that I understand that Bay Point is simply another venue just as Edgewater, Willys, Frank Brown, Boardwalk and others are venues, it becomes more of a non issue. Word will get around and the Bay Point venue will probably be the least visited of all.

What does Thunder Beach Promotions think they are accomplishing. A law suit brought against them by Boardwalk seems appropriate. The Thunder Beach administration does not have the legal right to tell bikers not to support the Boardwalk and or their vendors. Now to simply say that in a coversation is one thing, to broadcast it via the media is quite another. This is a PCB event and can stand as such without Thunder Beach Promotions involvment. Thunder Beach Promotions either needs to grow up or go away. What ever business model they are using is one designed to fail. Pitting local businesses and national corporations against each makes no financial sense. Bikers made this event successful and bikers will continue to keep it successful. Of course Thunder Beaches promoter does not even live in PCB which makes his tactics nothing other than an attempt to take more money from the businesses and bikers that support the rally, and that money goes out of town. I’d quit doing business with him, rename the rally the Panama City Beach Rally and continue a legacy we can all be proud of….

Being new to the area I’m not to familar with the Bay Point residents thoughts on folks whom enjoy the pleasures of the open rode. But still the same I’m sure many riders out there are not into Country Clubs and Golf. Please keep in mind that the events over the next few weeks will definitely increase the revenue in PCB. I can only imagine if Tiger Woods road a 3 wheeler and wanted to hold up at the Point, things would certainly be looked at differently.

But some of the comments about the bikers being “drunken mess” and “scum” is just wrong on so many levels. Captgeobob, I hope you don’t instantly label every group of people that go against the grain, or are different color or creed. You’ll never meet a more Patriotic, generous, and fun group of people anywhere else in your life. Quit watching old biker movies, or shows like “Gangland” and come out and meet some of us for yourself. You might just like us and who knows one of them could be your doctor,dentist, lawyer or preacher.

I happen to be a harley motorcycle riding scum, as is my husband and children. We live in Bay County and look forward to every rally. I agree that the Bay Point choice is unseemly, but since it will probably be a one-time deal, just grin and bear it. It’s really only three days. Also, the PCB Rally will live on. Others, like us, enjoy the vendors, exhibitions, people, bike watching and our amazing beaches. Nobody gives a crap who puts on the show.

My husband and I just returned from Thunder Beach and I can honestly say that I wish I had read this site before going down. I spend money at the hotel as well as with the vendors at Bay Point. Maybe all us “SCUM BIKERS” should think twice before spending money there again! You can’t tell me that 100,000 bikers don’t make a difference in the revenue brought to Panama City during these few days a year!

Interesting journalism….perception is the word, The article seemed middle of the road to me. If you would research, Thunder Beach offered Boardwalk to keep on as a title sponsor for free, however, because of whatever business plan Boardwalk has they chose different. Thunder Beach counts on sponsors and sale of merchandise. Thunder Beach is a free rally, meaning they don’t charge gates fees to any venues, parking fees, pull alcohol receipts or make any money off food. They do however market Thunder Beach heavily to bring people to the beach and count on our business sponsors to keep their returning business. The police force is great, the Chamber, The TDC the local business embrace THUNDER BEACH! They are not funded in any way by the city or the TDC. And making a statement that they are PCB BRO should bring legal action. My opinion “PCB BRO” sounds like a childs name….41 year old child…maybe! Oh and yes “PCB BRO. at least they don’t ask people to stay in one location. They move across the beach to make the entire beach successful. They also do extensive marketing to bring people here, it was obvious by the coverage of several national magazine. Bay Point was success with little issues. The entire community of PCB is residential so I don’t understand the concerns of “bringing this to a neighborhood”. PCB BRO sounds like a previous “disgruntled” employee of Thunder Beach. PCB BRO PCB RALLY (coincidence?) If PCB Rally truly thinks they can be successful on there own , pick another date, don’t try to ride the coat tails…… However, PCB Bro, making a statement that some of these organizations are on TB” payroll…there are your legal issues, and thank you. So now that it is all over, verdict? We came in from GA and knew nothing of this ahead of time. We enjoyed all the Thunder Beach venues and did not go to Boardwalk since we know how much ‘free’ work goes into keeping the rally free. Bay Point was professional and gracious, the riders we met were ALL minding their manners (save 2-3 drunks out of 70,000)! But that’s the same at PGA events, maybe even more so.
Thanks Bay Point! Thanks Thunder Beach! ‘Stuck Ups’ can stay home while they drive away tourist revenue!

Charisse, I would like to understand why you did not go to the Boardwalk? The Boardwalk has long been a supporter of the bike rally. This year the production company Thunder Beach decided not to have the Boardwalk as a Thunder Beach Production Co Venue. The Boardwalk did not do anything to make this happen. Since TB decided not to return to the Boardwalk does that mean the Boardwalk should not continue to try and host the same type events, entertainment, vendors, etc for the enjoyment of the bikers? Should Bikers not support a ‘Poker Run’ hosted by the Boardwalk that benefitted The Anchorage Childrens Home? This charitable event raised over $3,000.00 and the Boardwalk graciously matched the poker run proceeds. The Boardwalk hosting events did nothing to take away from the excitement of a great event but rather helped to enhance it. The Boardwalk did not interfere with the produciton companies events either. I would hope in the future you would come check out all the excitement going on at the Boardwalk.

This response from Thunder Beach is so freakin typical! How in the hell do they think a little competition will stop this from being a free rally? By the way, did anyone notice that ALL OF THE VENUES WERE FREE? Not just the TB venues? Also, the way they slandered Boardwalk SHOULD be actionable! This rally belongs to Panama City Beach. That’s the end of it. The locals are the ones who take care of the bikers. Don’t let one or two people who don’t like bikers and want to call them names fool you. The attitude of the vast majority of locals is that we welcome the bikers with open arms. TB just wants to contol everything and keep all the money for themselves. As an event planner, I just know the work that goes into the planning and orgaization of an event like this. I wanted to make sure I supported all their work especially since I didn’t have to buy a ticket to anything. I looked at the New Orleans Bike Fest and tickets are ridiculous compared to free. Boardwalk can be supported by those that want to, I just chose to spend my days and nights elsewhere.
As for the ‘stay away’ comment…many comments from suposed Bay Point residents were listed here. I took them at their word that TB wasn’t a ‘good fit’ in their opinion.
Let’s face it, everyone has the option to go where they want and do what they want. I just appreciate that TB looks for other revenue sources other than ticket sales so the rally stays free. It is exactly why I’m not on the way to New Orleans today – besides I gotta work 😦

It’s up to the property owners and we all want it to stay free. What we want is fair competition. No more mafia blackmail crap. See this for what it is. I’ve read with great interest the comments here, on other social networking sites and of course all the email I receive directly at Full Throttle. On the surface most event attendees never see what goes on behind the scenes, the hard work it takes or mostly the politics involved. For 2010 the behind the scene politics were very ugly.
Full Throttle Magazine has been participating in the rally since spring 2002 and has been a ‘title sponsor” for several years. As usual, TBP does not acknowledge or appreciate the contributions made by all the people that have been around for years. But the facts of what occurred this year are simply the facts and not the fabrication of facts that have been spoon fed to all.
We were informed the venue was being moved and told how good it would be for us and our Full Throttle events to move with them. After visiting the property I made the decision to remain at Boardwalk and notified TBP by mail. My decision was mostly based after realizing the excuse of road construction had no merit as two other venues withing walking distance remained as “Official TB venues.” To date we have not been contacted in any manner by them, but the vendors and other sponsors received a four-page letter throwing Full Throttle and Boardwalk under the bus. That is how we learned that we were no longer affiliated with TBP.
Obviously, as David Chapman says in these posts, others making comments here are making them with inside information that would only be available to the negotiating parties. But even then, the information is being distorted to fit the agenda.
The “stay away” from the Boardwalk comments referenced by Charisse and Charlotte in these posts were all over TBD website, their weekly e-blast, and in their magazine. That’s the thanks you get. People were told to basically boycott two entities, Full Throttle and Boardwalk, that have continually supported the event.
For all that have fallen for the “free” sales pitch. I’ve never spent a dime to to attend a major rally in Daytona, Sturgis or Laconia, unless it was something like a hill climb or major national concert act that cost a ton of money to produce. Regardless, that decision is up to the business owner and has nothing to do with TBP.
Full Throttle Magazine remains committed to the the success of the rally and will continue to work hard to do our part, but we won’t be victim to the strong arm policies of one individual telling us how we are supposed to run our own business. Thank you to our readers and all that came out and had a great time with us. See you in the fall.

You know this whole thing about a free rally is BS. Joe Biggs and TBP hold the Boardwalk as well as many others hostage so he can rent their real estate that they own to vendors and offer only a token of the money received to the families and businesses who own these properties while they line their pockets with vendor space money, t-shirt sales as well as many other ventures. They have even made a feeble attempt at getting into the magazine business. I was at the meeting 2 months prior to the rally when Randy and I made the decision to stay with the Boardwalk. The Boardwalk has been party central for Full Throttle and has never once betrayed us in any way. I damned sure can’t say that about Joe Biggs. Joe Biggs has never given Full Throttle any credit for anything.He has shown no loyalty to anyone I know of including his past business partners who I know personally. The only person that he is loyal to is Joe Biggs.. Let’s face it, if you really want to know what went on at Thunder Beach and how good a time everyone had you’ll read about it in Full Throttle Magazine or you will not know anything. And if you own a hotel or a business and you want people to know about it, do you want to wait until they get there to know about your rooms or events or had you rather them know about it three months prior when they are making their plans of what they are going to participate in while they are at the rally. Boardwalk Beach is definitely not the only one who has seen through this bonanza of BS and many others will start to see the light especially after all of the false statements that were made about the Boardwalk and the road construction. “we did this as a safety issue” Are you kidding me? It was a financial decision to try to help a struggling enterprise, two of them perhaps. Well, I know for sure that people are not going to be very quick to accept Joe Biggs at face value for his word anymore because they saw for themselves that the construction was probably better than it had been in years. I had a great time at the Boardwalk and I know that thousands of other people did too. I appreciate David Chapman whose word does mean something and all of his staff for the opportunity to do something good for Full Throttle as well Boardwalk Beach and look forward to many more great events there. It’s nice to finally do business with someone who appreciates your efforts and hard work rather than having that “what can you do for me today” mentality. The rally will always remain free. There really is no way to charge people anyway besides if you are going to thank somebody for a free rally you need to thank the vendors that rent the real estate to pay the cost of putting on the rally, the businesses that advertise and support the rally and the bikers who come down to have a good time and spend their money. That is who deserves the real thanks. Not to take anything away from anybody who is involved in helping putting on this event, if you think that it is easy, try it. But this old “blackball” mentality is not healthy for anyone, the businesses, the rally or TBP. I don’t understand why some folks can’t see that.

i just found this website and i have to say the spring rally was mine and my husbands first rally and we loved it we did not limit our visits to baypoint we visited every venue there including the boardwalk although i do have to say that i found the baypoint events a little off the beaten path from the rest of the events we still enjoyed them ALL and will be back again in the fall and we will not limit ourselves to one group of vendors we will enjoy them all and as for the comment on bikers being drunks and scum i am a mother of 5 i dont drink my husband is hardworking we have a nice house we and we enjoy riding because it gives us time away from our kids time together and pure freedom of the open road
