Panama City Beach Seafood, Music & Wine Festival Success

October’s Panama City Beach Seafood, Music & Wine Festival was in my opinion a huge success.  Now, some of my readers may think that I’m taking after many of the local media outlets in reporting things successful just because the TDC said it was, even though the numbers don’t support it.  *cough- Summer White Sale -cough*  But, I do believe it was a success because it was good for our area, and did something that was never before done with an event on Panama City Beach – provided good solid numbers that are irrefutable.

You see, some may scoff at the attendance of 9,526.  But I say, what do you have to compare it to?  Previous Indian Summer Music Festivals?  You mean the events where 30,000 attendees were estimated, but never substantiated?  You do know those numbers were pulled out of the air, don’t you.  What about the Thunder Beach numbers?  I was told by a reliable inside source that those numbers were also pulled out of the air.  60,000 attendees is VERY pie in the sky.  But of course, to their credit, how could they determine their rally attendance – they don’t charge for anything.  What has made it a success has also created limitations as to determining what it really is.

The single element that made the PCB Fest a success was that they came back to the table with real figures.  The end result is clear and concise.  Although the numbers aren’t what some had hoped, they are real none-the-less.

Jack Bishop said in the TDC meeting last week when he presented these numbers that they made some mistakes and learned a lot and to his credit, this is the first time he’s pulled anything like this off.  Of course, he had help, but still, I think this is the most promising event we have right now for our area.

I attended and talked to countless people – many of which came down from Alabama and Georgia just for this event.  In many instances the goal of this event, actually worked.  I know Lee Sullival was critical of this event, and you know I was in the beginning as well, but kudos to Jack, CJ, and their team for not only putting on a good show, but bringing back some solid numbers that are real and will help us build not only this event, but others in the future.

Please enjoy the stats below:

Panama City Pops Lauches Centennial Celebration

010809_popsThe Marina Civic Center will be alive with the sounds of The Panama City POPS “Sentimental Journey,” the orchestra’s centennial celebration Saturday, January 10, 2009, at 7:30 pm.

The evening promises to be an exciting one.  An officially sanctioned orchestra of the 2009 Panama City Centennial Celebration, The POPS will perform music from every decade of the last 100 years.  “It will be a very recognizable and thoroughly enjoyable program,” stated Maestro Eddie Rackley.  “The POPS will perform classical favorites by the likes of Strauss and Haydn, as well as sounds from the Big Band era, jazz and folk pieces, even Latin and rock.”

The highlight of the program will be the performance of two pieces specially commissioned for this event.  American conductor, composer and pianist, Louis Stewart, has written “Music for Panama City,” a Copland-esque composition echoing the sounds of the dean of American composers.   The second piece, “Emerald Jubilee”  has been composed by Kevin Kaska, whose “Golden Falcon Prelude” was debuted in at The POPS opening concert in October.

Louis Stewart, 64, is a native of Aberdeen, WA.  Currently an Associate Professor on the faculty of the Berklee College of Music, he is a graduate of the New England Conservatory in Boston and the Peabody Institute in Baltimore.  Specializing in new music, he has conducted and played premieres in New York, Seattle, Boston and Baltimore, and has guest conducted in the United States and Southeast Asia.

From 1971 to 1977 Mr. Stewart was pianist and assistant conductor with the Martha Graham Dance Company where he was involved with several revivals, premieres and international tours.  In 1976 he was invited to play a performance at the White House as part of a special ceremony honoring Martha Graham.  He has also authored two film and several theatrical scores, and is a recording artist for Denouement Records.

Kaska, 36, is a native of Seattle, WA.  While in high school he was the only protégé of  Hollywood composer-arranger, Vic Schoen.  He studied film composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.  While in Boston he formed his own jazz orchestra playing the music of Stan Kenton.

Mr. Kaska’s orchestral compositions, arrangements and orchestrations have been played worldwide by orchestras including John Williams and Keith Lockhart the Boston POPS Orchestra, the Seattle Philharmonic, Orchestra X in Houston, Phoenix Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra, as well as Maynard Ferguson and the Big Bop Nouveau Band and Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall.

“This concert will have something for everyone,” stated Rackley.  “Aficionados and nescients alike will be delighted and dazzled by the evening’s program.  It will be a wonderful tribute to Panama City.”

Individual tickets to the January 10 Centennial Celebration performance are $40 for adults,
$35 for over age 65 or active military, and $10 for ages under 12, and are on sale now at the Marina Civic Center, 850-763-4696 or www.marinaciviccenter.com.

Pier Park Ready for New Year's Bash

_mg_7137_2I was out at Pier Park today scoping the grounds for our live production tommorrow for the first ever Panama City Beach New Year’s bash that is being presented by Margaritaville.

Pier Park has done an amazing job of putting together a great party for everyone in Panama City and Panama City Beach to enjoy.  I was talking to Berna-Liza, Sales and Marketing Manager for Margaritaville and remarked that this is the first time Panama City Beach (as long as I’ve been here) has done something like this that the whole community can come together and celebrate this once-a-year holiday.

There will be something for everyone.  If you are a drinker, there will be tons of places to party, if you are a family person, there will be bouncy houses and open areas to play, if you are a loner, there will be tons of people there to keep you company.  I love it, I can’t hardly think about sleeping tonight.

The family time, from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, will play host to stilt walkers, face painters and live music playing on the main boardwalk area AND in the open area in front of Bootleg BBQ and Starbucks.  Then, at 9 pm, the countdown party will begin with more live music and prizes given away from the stage in front of the beach ball every 20 minutes.

The beach ball is an illuminated 8 foot ball with the Pier Park logo on it that will be suspended 120 feet in the air.  As midnight approaches, it will be lowered by a winch, ringing in the new year.  At the exact moment the ball hits the ground, fireworks will shoot off on the beach just next to the pier that is currently under construction.

I’ll be there, along with a buddy of mine, Lou Columbus, shooting video, taking pictures and having a grand ‘ol time.

See you at Pier Park!

That’s right, you read correctly. We’re moving on up in this world.  We will be broadcasting live from Pier Park in Panama City Beach on New Year’s Eve.

So, if you have nothing else to do but sit in front of your computer on New Year’s Eve, then you can spend it with me at Pier Park.  We’ll be doing a live video starting every hour on the hour beginning at 5 pm.  Each broadcast will be a minimum of 5 minutes.  We’ll have some guests on the show, and we will be video taping all the action.

The first annual New Year’s bash at Pier Park is sponsored by Panama City Beach’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Margaritaville.  With live entertainment, dazzling holiday lights, and a fireworks display, this will be the place to be in Panama City Beach on New Year’s Eve.

Starting at 5:30 and going until 8 will be family time.  There will be bouncy houses from Beach Bouncers, stilt walkers, live entertainment, face-painters and more.  At 9 pm the countdown party will begin with the climax at the Beach Ball drop and a spectacular fireworks display.

Of course I will get the whole event on video, from all around Pier Park.

In order to view the live feeds, go to the TV page.  Also on the TV page, I will put up a tentative schedule in the next two days.

First Ever New Year's Beach Ball Drop in Panama City Beach

Celebrate the start of 2009 with a bounce and a bang at the New Year’s Eve “Beach Ball Drop” in Panama City Beach, Fla.  Presented by Margaritaville and hosted by Pier Park, this first annual event rings in the New Year with live entertainment and fun activities for the whole family, including a spectacular fireworks display, amidst dazzling beaches and holiday lights.

Creating its own beachside version of Times Square, Panama City Beach will close the roads of Pier Park for pedestrian traffic only and host a street festival with live music, food, festivities and more.  To mark the start of the New Year, a larger-than-life illuminated beach ball will slowly descend from a 120 ft. tower, 12 stories high, at the stroke of midnight.

“The Beach Ball Drop is the first of what promises to become an annual tradition at Pier Park, Northwest Florida’s largest shopping, dining and entertainment venue,” remarks Felicia Cook, Director of Mall Marketing for Simon Property Group. “We are thrilled to play host to this one-of-a-kind New Year’s Eve event and look forward to ringing in the New Year in Panama City Beach.”

Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with exciting activities for the entire family including live music, food, bounce houses, stilt walkers and face painters and a Florida Lottery “Prize Zone.”  The New Year’s Eve countdown celebration starts at 9:00 p.m. with more live entertainment, leading up to the awaited Beach Ball Drop at midnight.  The evening will culminate with a spectacular fireworks show over the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

“The New Year’s Eve Beach Ball Drop provides the perfect opportunity to visit Panama City Beach and become a part of history,” states Dan Rowe, president and CEO of the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.  “We welcome locals and visitors alike to join us for a weekend of cheer and celebration as we kick-off 2009 in the world’s most beautiful beach destination.”

Bay Point Billfish Pledges Tournament Proceeds to Charity

Heading into its 26th year, the Bay Point Invitational Billfish Tournament continues to raise the billfish tournament bar by announcing its commitment to donate proceeds from the 2009 tournament to the St. Joe Community Foundation.

Along with proceeds from the event set for July 15-19 at Bay Point Marina, the entire entry fee from the 71st and final boat will go directly to the Foundation. The Invitational’s commitment to the Foundation is a natural evolution for the tournament, which from its inception has been deeply rooted in the Florida Gulf Coast community and has consistently supported local charities.

In 2008, the Invitational added two successful community-focused programs – the Soldier Salute and Al Hubbard Kids Fishing Experience. Event-goers and participants welcomed the events with open arms, and both events will be expanded for the 2009 tournament. The wonderful reception of these events helped affirm the decision by event organizers to take the tournament’s long-standing commitment to the community a step further by pledging its proceeds to the St. Joe Community Foundation.

“We are absolutely thrilled about the Invitational’s partnership with the St. Joe Foundation,” says Tournament Director Scott Burt. “We have the opportunity to take the success of our tournament and use it to support an organization that has a proven record in helping so many people and organizations in Northwest Florida.”

The St. Joe Community Foundation serves Florida’s Bay, Franklin, Gulf and Walton counties. Since its start in 1999, the non-profit Foundation has given more than $14 million in grants and pledges back to these Northwest Florida communities with a focus on improving quality of life by supporting education, healthcare, conservation and cultural projects. In Bay County alone, the Foundation has sponsored the Aquatics Center, teaching and learning grants, literacy programs, scholarship funds, transportation for disabled adults, Special Olympics athletes, children’s home renovations, arts and nature programs, and most recently the Audubon of Florida’s conservation efforts near St. Andrews Bay. For more information on the St. Joe Community Foundation, visit www.stjcf.com.

Along with its ongoing community efforts, the Bay Point Invitational reigns as the premier social event of the Panama City Beach area with more than 13,000 spectators over the tournament weekend enjoying live entertainment, the Sponsor Village, the Invitational’s World Famous Dock Walk and, of course, the Friday and Saturday night weigh-ins.

New to the 2009 event is the 40/40 Shootout – a separate division within the Invitational geared specifically to smaller competitive fishing boats. The “tournament within the Tournament” will feature 40 boats of 40 feet or less in length fishing for tuna, wahoo and dolphin.

With more than two decades of success under its belt, the Invitational is recognized as one of the most prestigious billfish tournaments along the billfish circuit and continues to make waves. The tournament made history during its 25th anniversary by going full release for all billfish – a significant change that was embraced by participants and spectators alike. In fact, 47 boats vied for nearly $1 million in prize money.
The Bay Point Invitational Billfish Tournament is hosted by the St. Joe Company and Bay Point Marina.

Jazz at Grand Panama this weekend

On December 13th beginning at 1:00pm The Village of Grand Panama retailer’s association is hosting An Afternoon of Jazz. The concert will feature famous saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa, Panama City’s “On Call Band”, and the Patronis Elementary Christmas Choir.

One of the most sought after jazz saxophonists in America, Jeff Kashiwa made a name for himself as a member of the popular group, The Rippingtons. His music is lightly grooving and mildly soulful.

This proceeds from this event will benefit the Children’s Home Society. General admission tickets are $15.00 and VIP tickets are $30.00, which include special seating and two drink tickets. Tickets can be purchased at The Hangar Men’s Clothing Store and Envy Boutique in The Village of Grand Panama.

“The retail association is excited to host this event featuring Jeff Kashiwa,” said Erica Spivey, event coordinator for An Afternoon of Jazz. “We hope the community will come out and enjoy an afternoon of great live entertainment, shopping, and celebrate this holiday season by supporting the Children’s Home Society.”

New Year's Party at the SunSpree

When the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping is over and you finally sit down to make your party plans for New Year’s Eve, make sure safety is part of you checklist.  Panama City Beach has a few different options for ways to play on New Year’s Eve, but most of these options involve a champagne toast then a drive across town to get home. We suggest you leave the keys behind when you head out for a good time and stay where you play. The Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort is hosting the best New Year’s Eve Party on the Beach!

Last Year’s Party was a huge success; everyone who came last year had a great time. “We had a wonderful time, the food was amazing, the party was so much fun and the music was great – even my husband danced! Then we just walked right up to the room and didn’t have to worry about driving.” Said Dawn Silk, guest of the Holiday Inn SunSpree New Years Eve Extravaganza 2007. This year the SunSpree has even more in store for New Year’s Eve!

We Say Merry Christmas, Tree Lighting

The Christmas Spirit filled the air with smells of pine and cookies arousing our senses.  Hundreds of people came to watch as their children and their neighbor’s children sang carols on platform risers with smiles on their faces and sugar rushing through their veins.

Churches and schools from all over Panama City Beach served sweets of all kinds on decorated tables.  The choice of beverage was consitently a clear soda mixed with a sherbert and fruit concentrate.  A few had cake, but most had cookies.

Young boys and girls walked around with overflowing plates of treats, surely spoiling their dinner, but nobody cared, it’s Christmas.  I had my fair share of sweets, and definately spoiled my dinner.

This time of year always seems to bring such joy.  Smiles were everywhere and so were friends.

Santa arrived in his lighted chariot with a huge motorized ladder attached to the top, ideal for boarding his sleigh should Rudolf be reluctant to drop below an altitude of 100 feet.  As he walked in, kids of all ages gleamed with dreams of presents under the tree.

The tree was lit with much fanfair and excitement.  As the lights came to life, the eyes of lookers-on sparkeled.  Christmas is officially here, the tree at Frank Brown Park had been lit.

Merry Christmas everyone.
