Pet of the Week – Jake the Jack Russell/Chi mix

jake-3Jake is a lively, 1.5-2 year old Jack Russell/Chi mix that came from a high-kill shelter. His time was up, and the shelter director just knew he was too much of a gem to not find a family. We took him, and he is truly a sweetheart! He is housebroken, and SO friendly and good with everyone. He loves to go for walks and play with other doggies.

Unfortunately, the vet told us Jake is Heartworm positive and needs treatment as soon as possible. He is an excellent candidate due to his age and otherwise health, and we want to help Jake.

We pray someone finds it in their hearts to not only help us sponsor Jake’s vet bill, but also to give him that forever home that he longs for and deserves.

“Happiness is…” Increased Business at Edgewater Beach & Golf Resort

Cornerstone Marketing & Advertising, Inc., the agency of record for The Resort Collection of Panama City Beach, recently designed a new website for Edgewater Beach & Golf Resort, a signature property of The Resort Collection. The website launched May 11, 2009 unveiling a fresh image with rich photography, enhanced graphics, clean design, easy navigation and a wealth of information encased within a branding message of “Happiness.” A short two months since the website went live, there has been a 42% increase in site traffic and 33% increase in online reservation bookings compared with the prior two months.

“Everyone needs to hear some good news and know that all is not doom and gloom,” said Lisa Burwell, president and founder of Cornerstone Marketing & Advertising. “Cornerstone’s vice president of creative services, Bob Brown, did an outstanding job crafting this beautiful site along with the rest of the Cornerstone and Resort Collection team. This surge of business for Edgewater serves as a reminder that an investment in image pays off even in hard times.”

Paul Wohlford, vice president of sales and marketing for The Resort Collection, said, “We are thrilled about the results we are experiencing and glad to see that our guests find the new site to be as helpful and refreshing as we do.” He added that the branding message, “Happiness is…” communicates that now, more than ever, people need to take a break from the stresses of daily life and enjoy themselves on a vacation and is part of the marketing terminology, “deservability.”

5 things to Expect (& Not Expect) at the Spring Break Community Forum

As you may know, on August 19th the TDC and CVB will have a community forum to discuss Panama City Beach Spring Break and whether or not marketing funds should be allocated to bolster the annual raucous event. Now, no doubt some of you are rolling your eyes, others are chomping at the bit to bequeath their 2 cents, but after reading many of the comments left after my recent post, I thought it might be a good idea to preface the forum with some possible expectations. The Spring Break topic is the single most polarizing concern on the minds of residents and business owners and often conversations on the topic kindle contentious emotions. To date, all conversations have ended in dialectal stalemates. And it should be noted, the purpose of the forum isn’t to promote or to undermine any particular argument, but is an attempt to find a middle ground in all this. So, what should we expect?

Civility (Hopefully):

Spring break makes people act crazy…and that’s not just the kiddies coming down for college. Residents get crazy just talking about how breakers destroy everything in their wake. The emotions are so deep-seeded on that topic, that simple conversations can become very, very contentious. It is important that the topic be seen from both sides. Yes, business owners make lots of money and yes, residents are uncomfortable in their own homes. Both perspectives are valid. But losing your cool in a public forum won’t solve any problems. So keep it cool and civil.

Long-Winded Comments:

No time limits or rules of order will keep people from squeezing every last drop out of their point. But those of you who plan to unleash their carefully written dissertation on why spring break is demonic or why we need spring break economically, trust me, mostly it’s been heard before. The focus of the forum should not be on your spring break experience, good or bad, but on trying to inch our way towards the middle of the road.

Passionate Arguments:

I am a huge proponent of individuals being passionate about something. And, to some degree, public forums are supposed to encourage how people truly feel about a topic. These ideals, on which you passionately stand, will on some occasions become full-blown arguments. This is to be expected. It is important, however, that we try to be respectful. If someone breaks down into tears while speaking their view, see it for what it’s worth. I’ve personally witnessed this happen and several audience members rolled their eyes in disdain. This is a topic people do feel very passionate about and as inclusive members in the “community” forum, we should be respectful.

Don’t Expect Answers:

This forum is not meant to stamp out any and all inquiries with answers. In fact, it is the opposite of a Q and A. This forum is for local businessmen and women, residents and even some vacationers to voice their opinion to our governing body. It is a place to speak and to listen. Don’t expect to leave knowing one way or another how everything will turn out because in the end there will not be a spring break final solution. It is more likely you’ll leave with more questions than answers.

Don’t Expect The End of Spring Break:

No matter if every single person in the forum is against spring break, the truth of the matter is, spring break won’t end tomorrow. In fact, spring break won’t ever “end” because as long as Panama City Beach exists the breakers will come. No matter how you dress it up, no matter how you tone it down, we all must understand that putting money into spring break or putting money into a campaign to eradicate it won’t change it much either way. Consider spring break the vacation roach, if you will. It will keep coming back, be it with college kids, families or something different entirely, we just have to figure out a way to live with it the best way we can.

The community forum will be held Wednesday August 19th at City Hall.

VIDEO: My Visit to the New Airport Construction Site Answers The Big Question

I’d be willing to bet that fewer people have seen a new airport in its initial construction phases than those who have hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. And being that I’ve already made the hike (Really, I did), I’m certified to say that after touring the new airport site, this $318 million dollar triumph of construction can, in many ways, hold its own against a wonder of the world. I spent the morning touring the site and came to one very clear, incontrovertible conclusion: the new airport will be the catalyst to a Panama City Beach evolution.

I entered the airport through an access gate and drove down a wide 4-lane street which will one day be Panama City Beach’s first impression tourists. It was hardly more than a timberline, but I could see what it will become. I could see the tropical landscaping, palm trees and colorful hibiscus lining the corridor, small hotels, perhaps even resurrection of some PCB classics long closed, there for guests in transition. I could see that street packed with rental cars, big vans, taxis and shuttles transporting happy vacationers.

We reached the first construction trailers that overlooked the mammoth partially completed site. The air smelled of disturbed dirt and diesel fuel and huge tractors flattened the land in every direction. Our plan was simple, take a tour of the runway and head over to the terminal. We met up with Amy Ausley, airport Public Relations, and Bill Holman, Airport Relocation Manager, for our tour.

runwayFirst we drove around the site. Already a number of construction projects whttps://pcbdaily.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=5164&_wp_original_http_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fpcbdaily.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fedit.php&message=1ere in the final phases of their completion. The retention ponds, plumbing and irrigation and much of the electrical neared completion. But what came as a surprise to me was the runway. This huge, 8,400 ft. runway, fully paved and seemingly ready to land a plane of any size, was already in its initial lighting stages. It even had an additional 2,000 ft safety area fitting comfortably into FAA standards, differing entirely from the current airport which isn’t even close to FAA standards at a measly 69 ft of safety area. Looking down the strip of unobstructed pavement I amused two thoughts: 1. having a Lamborghini or a Porsche would be a lot of fun right now and 2. It won’t be long before this is the busiest runway in all of Northwest Florida.

Surrounding the runway was more grass than you could imagine. It was a bit of a shock, but I was told by airport staff that environmental issues were taken seriously. In fact, the DEP fine of $257,000 for environmental damages was taken so seriously by airport staff that there have been talks of in-kind donations of land for mitigation or time on future environmental projects.

We came around the runway and, after spending a few minutes stuck in rain-mud, we hit the terminal where I could not have been more blown away. The parking lot is completely finished needing only a final coat of tar and painting to be ready for business, and as we came upon the massive terminal, a few men worked on the bridge that lead to the passenger unloading area, a sort of gateway to the future. We inched over and could see the airport terminal in its entirety.

run-outsideThe structure was so close to completion, it was easy to imagine it in its final form. All the steel was up and fitted, the roof was over 90% complete and the curbs of the drivelanes were already done. Even architectural aesthetics like huge 100% harvested wood overhangs that will shield passengers from the rain was completed. We stepped inside the open doorway to find much of the interior shaping into its final form as well. Office areas, ticketing counters, baggage and security checking features (which will be fitted with the most elaborate security system to date) and administrative areas were quite visible, the whole of it designed like the existing airport only much, much bigger. I could see all the anxious vacationers already, families, spring breakers and all sorts of wayfarers bustling up and down the halls ready to start their getaway to Panama City Beach.

Upstairs were more administrative areas as well as the nearly completed passenger loading areas and gate access. There was enough space for seven total gates more than double what the current airport can house. There were gaping areas for windows and also in the ceiling for sky lights that will literally flood the airport with natural light. Out the window, in the distance the fire safety, storage and maintenance buildings were nearly ready for use. I could also see the imposing control tower, a 12 story 120 ft structure, soon to be topped in metal framing.

interiorAs I walked the gate areas, the realization of the airport’s effect on Panama City Beach struck me profoundly. There have been all sorts of discussion on this topic, even debates started by yours truly, but once I visited the site, I understood. This airport really will change everything. Consider how well Panama City Beach has done for a destination the last 20 years. For such a small place, we’ve done quite well; even now during a recession we continue to do well. All this progress and prosperity, it’s difficult to realize that, truly, PCB development and growth has been choked by the current airport. And it may not be until the first 737 lands that people begin to understand what the new airport will amount to, but rest assured the impact will be gamechanging. And it starts with carriers.

Because New Orleans and Jacksonville are the closest Southwest carriers, and based on their business model, it is very likely Southwest will be Panama City Beach’s low cost carrier. What that simple sounding circumstance translates to is the curing of Panama City Beach’s greatest economic hindrance: the off season. That time of year will be completely transformed by cheap flights inflating a dreary few months into full-on seasonal status. Can you imagine what being a year-round destination will be like? We’d be a mini-Miami. Even if you think of it on a smaller scale, as I toured the incomplete airport, it occurred to me that 737s will carry anywhere from 138-200 people. That is significantly more than the current 74 people on a single flight into the existing airport. That’s double the people arriving at a deeply reduced rate. And that’s not just with Southwest. Our current flagship carrier, Delta, will no longer be limited by the parameters of the existing airport and flight costs will drop making Panama City Beach the most likely landing place for vacationers. No more Tallahassee and no more Pensacola.

The date of completion of the airport will play a major role as well. The airport will be completed around the same time analysts and pundits predict the economy to rebound. Panama City Beach will see a surge of development and increases in capital.

This evolution of Panama City Beach, by way of the new airport, will force certain deflected issues to be seriously discussed. Issues like new improved developments, form-based coding, hospitality training and more. For me, all this had been but talking points, theories and ideas. But when I walked down the massive airport, the area on which it sits and the ease with which vacationers will get to PCB ,it became quite clear to me. Because of the new airport, 10 years from now Panama City Beach will be a completely different place: suddenly feeling much closer to Miami than ever before.

A side note: Before I left the site I stopped by the construction trailer to thank the staff. On the wall there was a big digital clock counting down the time remaining. At the time, the clock read 283 days, 12 hours, 54 minutes, 23 seconds and counting. Everything is on schedule.

July Fourth at Pier Park – Video

If you were out there, then you know that the party Pier Park sponsored at Aaron Bessant Park this year was nothing short of amazing.  I just want to take a moment to thank the team at Pier Park for caring so much about the community and really becoming involved when it comes to being sure our perfect slice of paradise is not only beautiful, but also clean.

Recently in a discussion with Paul Ajdaharian, one of the VP’s at Simon Property group, he was telling me that the closely manicured landscaping and near always meticulous look of the property is very intentional, he quoted saying “you wouldn’t beleive how much money goes into keeping this property looking this great every month.”  You see, this does more than make Simon look good, it makes Panama City Beach look good as well.  The premier shopping and dining complex in Panama City Beach is going to attract near every tourist that vacations in Panama City Beach, and if they don’t have a great experience there, they’ll remember it.

I was talking to someone a few weeks back who was telling me the reason Felicia and Ashley (the marketing girls at Pier Park) do so well in involving the community with events at Pier Park is because they work so hard.  And, although I do agree that they work hard, that’s not why all of this is so successful.  This all works so well because they LOVE what they are doing and their passion shows greatly in everything and everyway they participate in the community.

While its easy to criticize Pier Park and complain to me about giving them so much coverage, Pier Park has single handedly done more for this community than any one entity has for a long time, and it has given us a way to come together as Panama City Beach in a way that’s never before been seen – just look at the crowds for New Years and July 4th!

So, enough of the mushyness, here’s the video.  Great work Pier Park!

25 Pier Park Restaurants – Complete Guide to Dining in Pier Park

Hundreds of people land on pcbdaily every month searching for Pier Park Restaurants, so I thought I’d give you guys the most complete list in Panama City Beach for restaurants in Pier Park.  The list is broken into three categories:

Food Via Wait Staff
  • Back Porch Seafood and Oyster House
Fresh seafood restaurant right across the street from the Gulf of Mexico.  Dine on traditional seafood platters in a casual and laid back atmosphere. Sandwiches from $10 to $14, and dinner from $16 to $25.  Back Porch is located at the corner of Front Beach Road and the main boardwalk area of Pier Park.

    • Bootleg Barbecue
“We live our lives like we smoke our meat, slow and on the beach.”  Bootleg owner Josh Daugherty comes from a back ground in high-end cuisine, but with solid roots in slow roasted pork butts, he returned to BBQ.  Bootleg Barbecue restaurant in Pier Park is truly one of a kind, bringing the sweet savor of BBQ sauce and quality meat and sides in a fun environment.  Sandwiches from $8, plates from $13, and huge party feast catering with special pricing!  Bootleg is located in the “festive” grounds, right next to Starbucks.

      • Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar
Dubbed “Panama’s Football Headquarters,” Buffalo Wild Wings in Pier Park brings the traditional combination of watching sports on a gazillion flat screen TV’s and eating messy, spicy wings to Panama City Beach.  If you love sports and food, this is the place to go.  Not to mention their phenomenal wing specials and sauce that will literally make you cry (it made me cry, and I was heckled because of it, but it was worth it).  They are one of our advertisers, be sure to say PCBDAILY and get $5 off on orders $20 or more!  BWW is a restaurant located right across from Five Guys on the main boardwalk area of Pier Park.

        • Guglielmo’s Italian Grill
“If you love authentic Italian cuisine. . .  Guglielmo’s is the place to be.”  Located in the middle of the action in Pier Park, Guglielmo’s is a big-box chain that brings little Italy flavor to all their dishes.  I have no idea what the pricing is as they don’t have it on their web site – sorry!  Guglielmo’s is located in the “festive” area, next to Bootleg Barbecue.

          • Guy Harvey’s Island Grill
What would Panama City Beach, much less Pier Park, be without one of Guy Harvey’s four Island Grills.  Fans of Guy Harvey can buy authentic shirts and other apparel along with art and more in the gift shop, then dine on a menu consisting of no protected fish.  Guy Harvey’s is located on the main boardwalk area, on the east side close to Front Beach Road – you can’t miss it!

            • Hofbrau Beer Garden
All I have to say is German Beer and German Food.  And, don’t forget they are also an advertiser of pcbdaily!  They’re doing a special for the whole month of August: $8 liters after 8 pm for the entire 8th month of the year!  Hofbrau Beer Garden is located in the main boardwalk area, right across from Red Brick Pizza and across from Tootsies Orchid Lounge.

              • Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville
Seriously, the best location in Pier Park.  Located directly on Front Beach Road, they have an unobstructed view of the Gulf of Mexico and those amazing sunsets that come with that view.  You can eat here from $7 to $14.  Margaritaville is located right on Front Beach Road on the west side of the main boardwalk area of Pier Park.

                • Longhorn Steakhouse
Mmmoooooo, yeehaa!  Lookin’ for a steak?  This is the place to go.  With a lunch and dinner menu you can get anything from burgers to chicken to their legendary steaks.  Longhorn Steakhouse is located on the north side of Pier Park, right on Back Beach Road or Panma City Beach Parkway, next to Olive Garden.

                  • Olive Garden
You know the saying, “When you’re here, you’re family.”  And last time I was there, I sure felt great when I left!  My wife and I spent around $30 after tip, a little more than we usually spend, but we were extremely happy with the service.  Olive Garden is located on the north side of Pier Park right on Back Beach Road, next to Longhorn Steakhouse.

                    • The Cantina Bar and Grill
If you love Mexican, you’ll love The Cantina. Authentic Mexican food in an amazingly cool environment, this place is definitely sure to please. As if great food wasn’t enough, The Cantina also plays host to weekly trivia on Wednesday nights and regular salsa dancing lessons. The food is prepared from the freshest ingredients and features dishes from Baja Fish Tacos to burgers and wings. Plus, they have the largest selection of Tequila around.

                      • Red Robin Gourmet Burgers & Spirits
There’s a lot of hype about this place, but bring your wallet because they ain’t no Five Guys.  The burgers were good, but the fries weren’t all they were cracked up to be.  But, that’s just my opinion, tons of people love these guys, don’t let me stop you from enjoying their really fun atmosphere!  Burgers from $9, fries included.  Red Robin is located in the north section of Pier Park in the same building as the Great American Cookie Maker, across from where Baja Grill was and down from the AT&T store in Panama City Beach.

                        • Reggae J’s Island Grill
Like reggae music?  What about seafood with a Caribbean flare?  This is your place.  Owned by the same people who own Back Porch Seafood and Oyster House across the street, you know the seafood will be local, fresh and great.  Sandwiches from $9 and dinner from $12 to $20.  Raggae J’s is located in the boardwalk area of Pier Park (south section of Pier Park), right on Front Beach Road, on the east side opposite of Margaritaville in Panama City Beach.

                          • Tootsies Orchid Lounge
Honky Tonk and good ‘ol Nashville BBQ.  This is where the country boys and anyone else who loves lively honky tonk go to hang out.  Already Tootsies has brought celebrities to our little town, including Jamey Johnson, Kelsey Grammar (yes, Frasier), Kenny Chesney, and several others!  Go out, you never know who you might see.  Tootsies is located on the boardwalk area of Pier Park, across from Hofbrau Beer Garden and Red Brick Pizza

Food Via Order at the Counter
                            • Five Guys Famous Burgers & Fries
I love this place.  Seriously, these guys should be advertising with us, I tweet them so much.  I remember when I first published a story about them, someone remarked how expensive they were, but I’ve found the exact opposite.  Any place that I can go and get a soda, a few burgers, dogs and fries and feed myself, my wife and a couple of my kids for $20 is a huge winner for me, especially if the food is great.  If you can’t find Five Guys Burgers and Fries in the south side of Pier Park (the main boardwalk area), you need new eyes.  That building is probably one of the most visually appealing in the whole lot, and Pier Park is very beautiful.

                              • Hana Japan
All Japanese food, all the time.  Hana Japan is located right next to Marble Slab on the main boardwalk area, which is across from Five Guys and Buffalo Wild Wings.

                                • Panera Bread
For anything from sweet flat-bread sandwiches to fresh pasties to party catering platters, Panera has got it all.  This is my favorite place to go with my wife in the winter.  With each of us getting the “You Pick Two” and a couple sodas, we rarely spend more than $20 for a date – love this place!  Panera Bread is located on the north part of Pier Park where Target is.  In fact, you can see Target from the front doors of Panera.

                                  • Smoothie King
Oh man, I love smoothies. They’re so delicious and healthy and filling and so worth the trip over. Whether you are looking to “trim and thin”, partake in their Workout and Sports Nutrition smoothies, or you just want a delicious chocolate banana strawberry flavor cream dream smoothie, you’ll be happy.

                                    • RedBrick Pizza
Having recently eaten there, we got a large Red Brick Gourmet Works and a couple sodas for around $23.  A little high for a lunch for us, but the pizza was fantastic, atmosphere was good, and we had a great time.  Red Brick Pizza is located in the south section of Pier Park, also called the boardwalk area, and is across from Hofbrau Beer Garden and Tootsies Orchid Lounge.

                                      Eateries
                                      • Candymaker Candy Store
All types of home-made candy, enough to rot the teeth of you and your family, if you’re into that kinda thing.  I know my kids are, but I’ve had one too many root-canals.  Candymaker Candy Store is located in the “festive” area, which is right across from the movie theater, The Grand.

                                        • Great American Cookie/Pretzelmaker
I love cookies, and they have specials here all the time.  Located in the north side of Pier Park, right across from that fateful AT&T store that I spent 5 hours at buying two sweet sweet iPhones, you can spell the delicious aroma wafting down the sidewalk.

                                          • Kilwin’s Chocolates & Ice Cream
Love LOVE their ice cream and home-made chocolates.  They make chocolate and fudge right there under that roof, and I think they make the ice-cream too, but just not there.  There is a Kilwin’s in Destin (which is where it all started) and they’ve been successful here.  Kilwin’s is located in the main boardwalk area, on the east side, right down from Red Brick Pizza and Smoothie King.

                                            • Marble Slab Creamery
The name says it all.  If you like goodies in your ice-cream, this is the place to get it fresh.  Using huge, chilled marble slabs and heavy thick metal “crushers”, the staff at this tasty treat shop mix up anything you want in your ice-cream, from gummy bears to Oreos to M&Ms.  Marble Slab is located on the main boardwalk area across from Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

                                              • YoGurty’s Yummy Yogurt
Self-serve frozen yogurt is all the rage in the midwest and northeast, but a total first for our area. YoGurty’s brings a very unique and absolutely delicious twist to this summer delight. With 8 flavors to choose from and fresh toppings (I witnessed them chopping up toppings with a chef knife), this is a very tasty way to keep cool in the summer. Hint: try the Red Velvet Cake flavor, if you like chocolate, this flavor is simply amazing.

                                                • Polka-Dots Toys and Gifts
Selling all the retro toys and gifts that you can’t find anywhere else, Polka Dots also has snacks and other eatery items.  Polka Dots is located in the main boardwalk area of Peir Park on the east side, in the same building as Hofbrau Beer Garden and Buffalo Wild Wings.

                                                  • Popcorn Kingdom
This, my friend, is the place that dreams are made of.  Popcorn literally fills every nook and cranny of this magical place.  If you can dream it up, this place has the popcorn to open your eyes.  Popcorn Kingdom is in the boardwalk area of Pier Park in Panama City Beach, on the east side, same building as Buffalo Wild Wings.

                                                    • Smoothie King
The name says it all.  Smoothie King is located in the main boardwalk area of Pier Park, on the east side, in the same building as Red Brick Pizza and Kilwin’s Chocolate.

                                                      • Starbucks Coffee
Again, everyone knows Starbucks.  Starbucks is located in the “promo” area, and can be seen from The Grand Movie Theater.
