This fall’s Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally takes place in just a couple more weeks – starting Thursday, September 30th and wrapping up on Sunday, October 2nd. As was the case with this year’s spring rally, the Bay Point Marriott Golf Resort & Spa will once again play host to this autumn’s rally, a move that will undoubtedly continue to surprise some. However, if you are a concerned Bay Point resident or local and you didn’t get a chance to see the layout for yourself back in May, here’s a couple of things to bear in mind. A Panama City Beach Icon has Reborn
The smell of fresh fish, salt in the air, smiling faces, warm breeze, children laughing – these were all common elements found in decades past at what had been dubbed the “City Pier” on Panama City Beach. Located a couple miles east of Highway 79, the City Pier used to be called Dan Russell Municipal Pier, but has since found a new name. But, we’ll get to that in a moment.
Fall is the Season of EVENTS in Panama City Beach
You can keep an eye on all our most current events postings here.
When you think of the fall, you picture the leaves changing, cooler weather, orange and brown colors, and turkey. In Panama City Beach, we enjoy warm weather, warm Gulf waters that are emerald green, crystal clear and flat as glass, no lines at the grocery and EVENTS!
Years ago, it was realized to help a heavily based tourism-driven economy during non-peak months, special events draw people away from their desks and down to the beach for a getaway to spend money. The Panama City Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, for a long time only financially supported events during what is is called the ‘shoulder season”. This year, there are a few events that you won’t want to miss.
1.) Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally
Twice a year, Thunder Beach comes roaring through Northwest Florida, sometimes bringing as much as 30,000 bikers and their rides to the beach. They come in all shapes and sizes with their bikes to match. Two wheelers, trikes, hybrids, bikes with engines bigger than most cars, you can see it all at this eclectic mix of iconoclast road warrior. Of course, one thing that many overlook is the fact that most of these bikes are worth more than their family sedan and the rough looking dudes that ride them are doctors and lawyers in the real world.
The fall rally comes this year on the first weekend of October, just one weekend short of the next event.
2.) The Panama City Beach Seafood Wine and Music Festival
Known in years past as the Indian Summer Music Festival, this events roots came from locals wanting to celebrate getting their city back after a summer of tourism. The festival was typically held in October, which has been historically one of the most pleasant months in Northwest Florida. This is a time of year when the Gulf is still warm enough to swim in, the weather is usually perfect and the temperature is a very reasonable mid to high 80’s during the day. All of this makes for a perfect recipe for fall festivals.
The Panama City Beach Seafood Wine and Music Festival got it’s name a few years back when new promoters were awarded the event by tourism officials. The new promoters then changed everything, making it more organized and successful than it has ever been. Last year they brought in Styx who performed hits like Mr. Roboto, Lady and Show Me The Way, and this year they are bringing in REO Speedwagon, Lori Morgan and a special surprise that has yet to be announced as of this writing. The event is from October 8th through the 10th.
3.) Emerald Coast Cruizin Car Show
With just about anything cars from rat rods to classics to newer muscle cars, the Emerald Coast Cruizin Event has it all. The weather during years past has been perfect, warm and clear, and this year, they are expecting more than 2500 cars to attend. Located on the festival grounds of Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach, spectators can see an endless sea of shining paint, huge exhaust pipes and old fat men that are proud of their creations. This event takes place on the second weekend of November.
4.) Tons of other smaller festivals.
Oktoberfest – Downtown Panama City, every year, transforms into a Bavarian themed celebration fit with German Beer, food and other various treats. Drawing celebrators out of the woodwork from all over Bay County, Oktoberfest is sure to help you see blue and feel great. Bring your lederhosen out on October 1st and 2nd.
Jazz by the Bay – Fans of jazz and live music will love this charming little festival held in historic St. Andrew’s. Music will begin on Friday at 6:00 p.m. from the pavilion in Oaks-By-the-Bay Park – located at the foot of Beck Ave. next to the St. Andrews Marina. There will be food, beverage and festival concessions on site, and an exciting variety of jazz musicians performing all weekend long. The festival is free and open to the public. This event is on October 22nd and 23rd.
5 Ideas for Your Labor Day at the Beach
After a dismal summer tourism season from the BP oil spill disaster, tourism officials are very optimistic for this Labor Day weekend to end the summer season with a bang. Many local resorts are reporting full occupancy this weekend and with great weather projected for all three days of this extended weekend, locals and tourists alike are sure to have a blast.
Beach Conditions Improve
Since the oil spill interest has waned, we’ve been overwhelmed by interest in knowing what the beaches are like. What is the algae situation like? Is there any June Grass? Is it bad? Is the surf up? These seem to resound continually on our Facebook page, so we’re responding by shooting some quick video every week to show you.
This week we’re at the city pier across from Pier Park. If it seems like we’re here a lot, it’s because we are. Our office is on the west end, I live out here, so the beach out here is very accessible.
The beach conditions weren’t bad this week, the algae was hardly present, but you could see indication of June Grass some distance out. Here’s the video.
Oil Spill Barely Hurts June Bed Tax Collections
Despite a very dismal looking outlook at the beginning of the summer, the actual numbers for June are showing nearly even bed tax collections this year, compared to last year. In June, a total of $1,88,269.21 was collected. This compares to $1,946,037.92 in tax revenue that was collected in June of 2009. The actual variance is just over $61,000, or -3.17%.
This was an interesting summer, we had tons of things lined up to all but guarantee the best summer tourist season we’ve had in years. Ironically, right before the season began, there was what some may call a monstrous accident just a few short hundred miles away. After a summer of weekly and even daily threats, the damaged perception left our local industry practically starving for business and pleading with their customers to keep their reservations. The rental climate changed from one of knowing how the numbers were going to be all summer before Memorial Day, to guessing what the next week would hold for rental revenue. Shops and restaurants had no idea what to expect, but were bracing for the worst. Talking to retailers and resorts, numbers were way off this year. Obviously some fared better than others, but overall most suffered to some degree.
But lets get back to the bed tax numbers. The numbers were only down 3.17% this year. That doesn’t seem all bad, right? Well, you have to consider that a deficit of any amount is going to spread hurt across the board. You have to consider that with any new additions to the rental or retail inventory, plus some businesses ability to reach their customers over other businesses, that 3.17% can mean quite a different story for different people.
All in all, I think we are blessed to have done as well as we did, in Panama City Beach, despite the looming threat that impaled the perception of our beach this summer. Hopefully next year no outside forces will impede all the work that has been put into increasing our local tourism business.
July’s numbers should be out within the week, which will be the real test to see how the summer really fared. Stay tuned!

Panama City Beach Condo Market Update
Your friends at www.condosaletrends.com have been searching for a little good news in the Panama City Beach Condo market. The beaches look great. Pier Park looks great. The new airport looks great. The condo market looks a little ragged.
The following is our analysis of sales and re-sales from the 75 buildings contained in the condosaletrends.com data base. Developer sales not listed in the MLS were not included because we cannot confirm the existence of or lack of seller concessions.
There were significantly more sales during the first three months of 2010 compared to 2009 with fewer sales since May. July sales took a steep downturn with approximately 40% fewer sales than 2009. August doesn’t look much better. The oil spill didn’t help but the primary reason is due to the weak economy and the generally pessimistic outlook held by potential buyers.
Seafood Fest May Get Another $150k from CVB
The oil spill threat this summer took it’s toll on the opportunity for us to have a slammin’, jammin’ summer, but it wasn’t all bad. Our image was certainly tarnished, our tourism numbers were down a bit, but on the plus side, the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau received $2 million from BP to be used for marketing the beaches of Panama City Beach. This influx of marketing money has saved our CVB $750,000 from their regular marketing budget this year so far and has freed up some cash to use in other arenas.
