Bring your oldies music and desire to hear the soothing rumble of a big-block V-8 because this year’s Emerald Coast Cruizin Classic Car show is going to light up the streets, er grass at Frank Brown Park.  Last year’s event brought 3,000 hot rods, muscle cars, classic cars and newer street rods.  The entire grassy area of the festive grounds at Frank Brown Park was full from one side to the other with an endless sea of shiny paint.  When it comes to events in Panama City Beach, this is the best time of the year to hang out outside looking at cars at a carshow.

This year’s event is at the same location from November 11th to November 15th.  Hit the read more link for this year’s entire event schedule.

100 Condos up for Auction at Island Reserve – Absolute!

Tucked away right off Front Beach Road in Panama City Beach lies a hidden treasure of a resort with a plethora of amenities completed and waiting for you to enjoy.  The Island Reserve Resort is a well kept secret, maybe that’s why only 42 were sold and 257 are up for auction, 100 of which will be sold absolute.

On May 16, 2009, 100 condos will be sold absolute by Roebuck Auction Group.  Now before you guys bash us for publishing an advertorial, here me out. If the price is right, this could be a sweet deal for you.  And the fact that they are selling 100 condos absolute, everything is completed (including the amenities) and only 42 are off the developer’s books means the price will probably be right.  So, what is that price, you say?  We shall see, my friend, in the near future.

On with the resort.

My tour began in the 4,200 square foot half court basketball gymnasium with 35 foot tall vaulted ceilings overlooking the 1 acre lagoon pool.  Attached to the gymnasium is a fitness center, private theater room and club game room filled with a pool table, card table, bar and a sink.

When I walked out to the pool, I envisioned families playing and kids running about the spacious pool deck.  The pool area is very open.  The 1 acre lagoon pool features lanes on one end for laps and a beach entry on the other for the kids to play in the shallow water.  In addition to a waterfall feature, there is also a fenced area (using the nice black fencing, of course) with water spouts for the kids to play in.  This is very cool, as this way parents don’t have to worry about their little kids wandering into the pool when they play in this area.

The whole resort was designed like  small community with plenty of areas to spend time outside.  The landscaping was a little rough, but crews are working to revamp everything by auction day.

Up for auction are condos randing from 1 to 3 bedroom and townhomes either 3 or 4 bedrooms.

I went in a 2 bedroom condo and 3 bedroom townhome and both were well laid out and spacious.  The town homes come with 2 car garages, wine coolers and icemakers along with 3 floors to spread out in.

The draw back to purchasing thid kind of property a couple years ago was that you had to wait for the amenities to be finished.  Island Reserve is complete now.  The amenities are in place and begging to be used.  The condos and townhomes are done and move in ready.

Sure, this resort is not beachfront, but it is a resort with all the fit and finish and with the absolute auction, the prices should be good.  If you are in the market for something, I’d stop by and take a look.

In 2006, a 1 bedroom condo sold for $426,000, a 2 bedroom sold for $516,000 and a three bedroom sold for $616,000.

Here are the square feet of each size condo (heated and cooled):

  • Condos
    • 1 bedroom w/ study, 1 bath: 1069 sf — — — > 32 total units, 15 absolute
    • 1 bedroom, 2 level, 1.5 baths, 2 levels: 1520 sf — — — > 24 total units, 12 absolute
    • 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath: 1,325 sf — — — > 125 total units, 40 absolute
    • 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath: 1,761 sf — — — > 52 total units, 25 absolute
  • Townhomes
    • 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath, 2 car garage, 3 levels: 2,874 sf — — — >6 total units, 6 absolute
    • 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath, 2 car garage, 3 levels: 3,019 sf — — — >2 total units, 2 absolute

Rock, Paper Scissors Tournament to Award $20k

That’s right, you read the title right.  Not only in there going to be a Rock, Paper Scissors tournament tomorrow at the Boardwalk Beach Resort, but they are giving away $20,000 to the winner to put towards their college tuition.  There’s even an official League, the USA Rock Paper Scissors (USARPS) League and a blog, that has been covering the action so far here in Panama City Beach.

Here is the press release I found online:

AMP Energy, in conjunction with USA Rock Paper Scissors (USARPS) League, announced today they are launching the first-ever USARPS College ChAMPionship. Following preliminary rounds at 20 campuses across the country and 12 qualifying Spring Break events, co-eds will be given the chance to compete for $20,000 to be used towards college tuition at championship matches during mtvU’s Spring Break in Panama City Beach, FL, March 8 through 21.

Rock Paper Scissors, the popular two-person hand game, is a common arbiter of disputes, similar to flipping a coin or drawing straws. In 2005, the USARPS League was formed by Commissioner Matti Leshem as the governing body of the sport in the U.S. The League brought rules and structure to Rock Paper Scissors matches and continues to celebrate a game that has been played for centuries by people around the world. With students at rival schools like Syracuse and Rutgers, Alabama and Tennessee, and UNC and Maryland all vying for the title, the competition is sure to be intense.

“Students have counted on AMP Energy to give them an extra kick to make it through final exams,” said Maurice Herrera, Marketing Director, AMP Energy. “Now, one skilled Rock Paper Scissors player can count on AMP Energy to actually help pick up the tab for those exams. We look forward to awarding one lucky student who leaves Spring Break with the grand prize of $20,000.”

Thousands of students across the nation are expected to turn out for the competition. Qualifying matches are currently underway, leading up to campus finals where students will compete to win a Spring Break trip to Panama City Beach, FL to represent their school at the 2009 USARPS College ChAMPionship. At stake will be bragging rights and a check toward tuition, not to mention the inaugural USARPS College ChAMPionship title which will be awarded on March 18 following the final round of competition.

“They may have used their heads to get into college,” said USARPS League Commissioner Matti Leshem. “But they’re going to use their fists to pay for it!”

“Now more than ever, college students need a break,” said Ross Martin, Head of Programming, mtvU. “This year, mtvU’s Spring Break ’09 returns to Panama City Beach with incredible musical performances, the first-ever USA Rock Paper Scissors College ChaAMPionship, and now, thanks to AMP Energy, a shot to earn cash toward college tuition.”

AVP Press Conference – 2009 AVP Crocs Pro Beach Volleyball Touney

Tuesday March 10th, AVP (stands for Association of Volleyball Players for you cheeky ones) will be holding a press conference announcing its first-ever Spring Break event, the 2009 AVP Crocs Tour Panama City Open, as well as its exciting new partnership with Seahaven and Sharky’s Beachfront Resturant.  A light lunch will be provided.

Attending will be top VP athlete Nick Lucena. In 2008, Lucena and partner Sean Scott finished the season as one of the Tour’s highest-ranked teams. He is a Florida native and played volleyball collegiately at Florida State University. He will be competing in the 2009 Panama City Beach Open.

“We are excited to bring the AVP to Spring Break for the very first time,” said Leonard Armato, CEO and Commissioner of AVP Pro Beach Volleyball. “The biggest beach party in the country is the perfect atmosphere in which to kick off our 2009 season.” – A recent press release.

The press conference will be held at Origin in The Towne of Seahaven at 12 noon on the Observation Deck.  I’m not sure if they mean the 15th floor observation deck, and if so, which side, but I would assume the “public” side.  Either way, however, I’m sure the person at the front desk will know where to direct you.

I should be there.
