Pier Park is getting it's Own Beach!

If you’ve been wandering Pier Park in Panama City Beach in the last couple weeks, you’ve probably noticed they’re moving a lot of dirt across the street from Miracle Strip @ Pier Park and east where the sand volleyball court is.  This large swath of undeveloped land has been waiting for something exciting to occupy it since the beginning of Pier Park, and it finally has a future.

In a few weeks time, the fine folks at Pier Park will be moving in 3,600 tons of “Emerald Coast Beach Quality White Sand”, creating a real white sand beach in Pier Park, with all the fun except the water.  To keep everyone cool in our hot Florida sun they’ll be putting in four 40′ by 40′ staggered canvas shade structures that will be supported on all four corners by brightly colored poles of varying heights.  If you’re trying to get a mental image, picture the shade structures they have at the pool at Frank Brown Park, in Panama City Beach.

Some of the activities to take place in this new beach include shell digs, treasure hunts, archeological dig (sponsored by the Jr. Museum – still tentative right now though), sand sculpture contests, corn-hole toss games, and tons of other games the talented staff of Pier Park can dream up of.

So get your flip-flops ready, put on your shades, pack your beach towels and come on out to Pier Park, and don’t forget to say hi when you see me lounging in my beach chair.

(Click READ MORE to see video from the parade!)

Mardi Gras 2010, or more aptly named Mardi Gras at the Beach was put on by the Krewe of Dominique Youx.  This monumental event far exceeded expectations of local officials, event organizers and locals alike.  Last year the event was huge despite poor weather and threatening rain.  This year, with cloudy skies, a peeking sun and chilly weather, the event was even MUCH larger. Enormous Turnout for New Year's Eve at Pier Park

Definitely smashing the turnout record number from last year, this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration at Pier Park far exceeded expectations for success.  Last year’s event was immense, but this year the added elements brought out crowds by the thousands.  All through the night, we were continually amazed by the shear numbers of people that were everywhere.

Southwest To Sponsor "HUGE" New Years Bash At Pier Park

While the commonality between a giant Waterford Crystal and an 800-pound beach ball is not obvious, the season offers a clue. On Thursday, December 31, New Year’s 2010 will be ushered in by traditional countdown “drops” across the nation. Just as New York City has its Times Square Crystal Ball, Panama City Beach in Northwest Fla. will embrace its seaside roots with the second annual Panama City Beach Beach Ball Drop presented by Southwest Airlines. In collaboration with Southwest Airlines and hosted by Pier Park, Panama City Beach’s Beach Ball Drop event represents what the destination is all about — white sand beaches, family togetherness and just plain fun.

Something’s been a brewin’ in Pier Park and a movement is afoot to bring a little life revival to the new “downtown” of Panama City Beach.
