Why we can't use Emerald Coast International for the New Airport Name

Panama City Airport

A few weeks back a new name was chosen for the new airport: Northwest Florida Panama City International Airport.  And while this name in particular certainly did not excite the imagination of many local officials, locals AND readers of PCBDaily.com there was another immensely popular name that failed to make it through the selection process.  The naming of our new airport Emerald Coast International seemed to fall victim to legal issues and infringed trademark laws and branding efforts long underway by others in the area, around the country, and around the world.

Freezing Weather Blows Through Panama City Beach

Photo 135

Well, not freezing, literally, but still the weather is pretty darn cold, for Floridians, at least.  With highs in the lower 60’s over the weekend with a wind chill of mid-50’s, Panama City Beach natives were bundled up in their sweatshirts, sweaters and turtlenecks shivering as they walked the packed streets of Pier Park.  I went to Five Guys Burgers twice (I know, I’m an addict) and both times I waited in a fairly decent line.

11/9/20 – 11/15/09 – Emerald Coast Cruizin Car Show

Bring your oldies music and desire to hear the soothing rumble of a big-block V-8 because this year’s Emerald Coast Cruizin Classic Car show is going to light up the streets, er grass at Frank Brown Park.  Last year’s event brought 3,000 hot rods, muscle cars, classic cars and newer street rods.  The entire grassy area of the festive grounds at Frank Brown Park was full from one side to the other with an endless sea of shiny paint.  When it comes to events in Panama City Beach, this is the best time of the year to hang out outside looking at cars at a carshow.

This year’s event is at the same location from November 11th to November 15th.  Hit the read more link for this year’s entire event schedule.

After all the votes were counted, one sandwich stood above all others as Panama City Beach’s number #1 sandwich. By your vote, the resounding winner isLiza’s Kitchen’s Hippy Chick, a filling, delicious panini-baked treat that if you haven’t tried yet, you’re behind the times, my friend. Here’s the low down on this tasty dish.

Kayaker Lands Sailfish Quarter Mile off Shore in Panama City Beach

Anglers all over the Panama City Beach and Destin area are baffled at the recent wave of sailfish being caught in close proximity to our white sandy shoreline.  Talking to Brad Stephens from Sunjammers, he was telling me that nobody has ever known sailfish of any kind to be so close to shore.  “They’ve been hitting 4 and 5 a day out at the new pier,” Stephens said on the phone earlier.

Grand Lagoon Bridge Construction Update

The new Grand Lagoon Bridge in Eastern Panama City Beach is sure to light up in activity soon.  Recently they planted new utility poles to the west of the existing bridge and moved the utility lines from the old poles adjoining the existing bridge to the new poles.  Last time I was out there (about two weeks ago) they had moved the power, but cable and phone lines had yet to be moved.  That looks like it is all complete now.

CRA – South Thomas Drive Construction Update, Widening Road

When it comes to getting right down to business, the Front Beach Road CRA (short for community redevelopment area) in Panama City Beach is cranking out the first steps in making South Thomas Drive awesome.  The South Thomas Drive road, well known as a crater-ific, pitted nightmare of a road, is getting a huge shot in the arm by way of completely NEW road, widened travel path, sidewalks, beautiful landscaping and sweet street lamps.  Oh, and I forgot to mention all those ugly utility lines will be moved under ground; that’s huge!

New Rules Hamper Housing Market

I will be the first to agree that the mortgage industry was extremely under-regulated for years and feel that lack of oversight, among other things, was largely responsible for the collapse of the housing market and subsequent financial crisis we now find ourselves in. But two of the most significant changes we’ve seen in years, both designed to protect consumers and reign in unscrupulous lenders, have done more to hamper the housing recovery than provide better consumer protections.
