Are you a golf fan? Hoping to get out and enjoy the sunshine this weekend? This Sunday, March 7th, PGA golfer John Daly will be at the Holiday Golf Club, where a charity tournament will be held on behalf of popular local country singer Billy Pierson. Pierson was sadly killed in a car accident on August 7th, 2009, and was a regular performer at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge at Pier Park. This remarkably talented and likeable singer entertained fans night after night, and was on the verge of a successful career in Nashville before his untimely death last year.
Pierson had been planning a golf tournament in Panama City Beach as a way to give back to the community he loved so much, and Sunday’s event is set to be a great memorial to this wonderful and compassionate performer.
John Daly is known primarily for his “zero to hero” victory in the 1991 PGA Championship, and his driving distance off the tee that has earned him the nickname “Long John”. Daly will be placed on the 1st tee and all teams will have the option to donate $50 for John’s drive. All proceeds from this year’s tournament will be going to Lori Pierson, Billy Pierson’s wife. Next year the intention is to develop the tournament into a 2 or 3 day event where all proceeds will be donated to Make A Wish Foundation, Billy’s Charity of Choice. Another cool thing about this tournament is that The Golf Channel will also be in attendance, filming for Daly’s upcoming TV series, “Being John Daly.”
Please note: The main parking lot at Holiday Golf Club will be for tournament participants and media only. Additional parking will be located by the Par 3 course. The tournament starts at 10:00 am, followed by an award ceremony and a performance by the former lead singer of KANSAS.
The Holiday Golf Club is located at 100 Fairway Boulevard, Panama City Beach. Call (850) 234 3879 for more details.
