UPDATE: Panama City Beach Currently NOT On Oil Spill Trajectory Map

(Latest update: July 15, 2010)

Over the last few weeks, very small quantities of oil product have been reported and cleaned up on Panama City Beach.  And, when I say very small quantities, I mean so small that almost no one saw any oil wash up on the shores of Panama City Beach before it was cleaned up by the 700+ beach clean up workers that continue to patrol the beaches.  In addition to the 700+ workers that are walking the beaches by day, there are around 250 walking the beaches at night.

As of July 14th, the oil plume was located 130 miles from Panama City Beach.  At one point, it was as close as 20 miles off our coast.  What this means is that for the next two to three weeks, our beaches are all but totally guaranteed to be oil free.  This is great for the summer tourism season.  Right now, we are well outside the NOAA 72 hour area of uncertainty.

We are continuing to closely monitor the oil spill situation as it pertains to Panama City Beach.  Here are three ways you can keep up with exactly what’s going on here.  As new information develops, you’ll find out here first:

  • Facebook Page – Facebook.com/pcbdaily
    • can update from anywhere, and will post new developments here first.  We are constantly monitoring for questions and will do our best to answer.
  • Twitter page – Twitter.com/pcbdaily
    • If you are on Twitter, you can follow us for recent updates from on the scene.  We are constantly monitoring our feed for questions and will do our best to answer.
  • YouTube Channel – Youtube.com/pcbdaily
    • Twice a week we are producing HD videos of the beach with a brief update on conditions and showing you in high quality video exactly what the conditions are like.

As of July 15th 2010, there is no oil on Panama City Beach’s waters or shoreline, nor has there been any oil reported in Bay County from the Deep Horizon Oil Spill in several weeks.

Here are some quick facts on the Gulf Oil Spill from Deep Horizon:

  • There is an estimated 35,000 to 60,000 barrels of oil being discharged daily from the Deep Horizon Oil Well.  The “capping stack”, designed to capture greater quantities of oil, was installed on July 12. Additional analysis of the well testing procedure is currently being performed. The next step is a well integrity test, which involves closing one or more of the valves on the new cap for a period of time to allow BP to measure pressures in the well. On July 13 the total oil recovered was approximately 17,060 barrels.
  • There are around 1000 contracted workers locally walking the beach daily looking for oil and cleaning up when product is found.
  • One of the two relief wells being drilled is currently at a depth of 17,810 feet, while the other’s depth is at 16,000.

If you want live information, we’re at the beach every day.

Each week we are shooting videos of the beach showing the current conditions of the water.  Actually, as of the week of June 7th, we are trying to make it to the beach every three days to shoot HD video and every day to do a live streamcast.  Here are the places you can find video of the beach.  (NOTE: Go to our Facebook page and click the “Like” button to be notified when we are doing live stream casts.)

Here is our PCBDaily YouTube channel.

Hit the arrows on the side to scroll through our videos.  Most of the recent ones are of the beach and have been taken in the last couple weeks.  The latest video will be first.

  1. With that said, if we are not hit this could have a great effect on our economy. In the bad, there is always good to be had somewhere, somehow. I thank you for posting such a forward and candid article as so many seem to not be taking this seriously. Your previous article was right on track if we do get oil hitting our coast. However, if we simply get tar balls and yet many other popular destinations are hit we will see this benefit our tourism. I am happy that you were brave enough to give teh grave details of possibilities. Someone had to.

  2. The wife & I are due to arrive in PCB from Missouri @ 20:00 May 2nd. At this point we are more concerned about the loss of the Treasure Ship than the oil, but if we were arriving a week or more later the situation might be different. If people want abundant cheap oil for
cars, SUV’s, trucks, boats, four-wheelers, etc. then people are going to have to accept situations such as this as the inevitable “trade-off.” The wife & I drive small vehicles and I commute the 10 miles to work via bicycle as much as possible. No one who drives a huge fuel-guzzling vehicle has a right to complain about what oil companies do.

    1. Really? What a moron. So If if drive something that gets 29 mpg does that qualify? Then I have the right to complain about thousands of gallons of oil spilled into the gulf, but not if I drive something that gets say, 19mpg. You my friend are a fool.

My suv gets about 15-18 mpgs(bet Capricious just fell out of his seat) so who do you think the oil companies are getting rich off of not those who drive a prius and what difference does it make what you drive you are paying for them to get rich..DUH my gas your gas same price but i fill up more get where this is going right more money for the big man the less mpg means more fill ups, more money…starting to become a little more clear the oil companies love me they are not worried about more economical they just want $$$ so I guess that I could trade my SUV in make another 5 to 6 years worth of payments and then homeschool my kids, always eat dinner at home, get the dentist an doctor to start making house calls and the ball teams can come here for backyard sports because i cant take my kids anywhere they won’t all fit in a prius or maybe I can use them for a trade in or down payment for that prius…LOL NOT I am soooo never going to drive a car again especially a stinkin prius so not my style and besides anyone who has ever driven an SUV or gas guzzler knows that once you do it’s very hard to go back to driving a clown car (the only car i would trade my SUV for would be a new charger or a 68 Camaro gas guzzlers too so i guess i will take that extra 60-72 payments i would be paying for an economical car and put gas in my guzzler instead you have so much room and you are KING of the road.Wonder what our little friend Capricious has to say about that.If he had three kids who have back packs, sports equipment, friends over all the time and all the other crap to haul around how does he think it will fit in his mini cooper or miata or whatever his fav style of chicky clown car (as my kids refer to them)may be.I would love for him to show me how to get 3 kids,3 backpacks,3 lunchboxes, football equipment, softball gear, folding chairs for games and all the other stuff that we need or must have into a compact car and this summer when we go to the beack for over a week how does he suppose we would get luggage and other necessities for our trip in a compact car i guess we can take one outfit each and wash clothes everyday and oh how fun to go on an 8 hour trip packed in a car like sardines with 3 angry kids with no room to move or breathe yelling directly in your ear( ARE WE THERE YET ) another good point my SUV has so much space and leg room nobody is complaining of being cramped up.How wonderful that someone invented the SUV and the best thing for him is that he doesn’t buy my gas I DO and I pay my own taxes so i can complain about anything I want to ……..

      2. Wow, I was going to reply to Mr. gas expert, but you just took all the words right out of my mouth. I have 4 kids and drive a suburban and would not and could not downgrade for anything…not even lower gas prices.

      3. i usually dont reply to these comments but im going to take a shot with u i to have three children and i feel your pain about the prius but i feel like we have enough technology today to have a affordable suv without gas. the suv hybrid’s ive seen r 40,000? really who the he@# can afford that but us as a whole need to demand it… thats all:)

    2. hey stupid the more gas guzzling suv’s on the road the more money the oil companies make and people with children can’t very well pack them into a prius or any other little clown car and i don’t think those little chick cars are for guys so i hope you at least have one in a manly color but then again i don’t think anything could make those little bitty cars manly.I would really like to see you and your wife put three kids in a compact car especially if they are in car seats not happening and some people have more than three kids. If you ever have children i am willing to bet you will be tradind your compact chick car for something much larger if not good lick driving around a ball team i guess you can make several trips to get them where they need to go but then you will have used just as much gas as my gas guzzling suv.I know i am going to trade in my suv that is paid for and still in excellent condition for a new car so that i can make payments for 5 more years nobody has to pay for the gas it guzzles except for me and if i had a small car where are my kids gonna ride i guess i better get one with a luggage rack.It is all making sense now isn’t it those mini cars are not for families so a guess people should decide between having children and driving more economical cars and I am speaking from experience try getting 2 kids in carseats and 1 kid in a booster seat in the backseat of a neon oh boy was that fun on a daily basis those gas guzzlers come in handy after all!!!

    3. My SUV gets over 30 mpg, and I can haul more things than a little prius lunch box. I live in KY not in an urban setting and we have no bicycle lanes and way more than a 10 minute commute to work. The roads are rugged and rough and in the winter time you won’t last very long in the ice and snow in a small car. And I am one of the lucky few people in our area that can afford a nice newer vehicle. Some people do not have the options to be a world class “green” model citizen. I don’t support what the oil companies do most of the time, and I believe that our government could help us out a little more by setting more strict negotiations with them and the countries that the oil comes from. You shouldn’t set a judgement on a population because of what they drive, some people don’t have the options.

      1. It’s an absolute laugh reading all these posts about how if you have 3 kids, you NEED an SUV to have a quality of life. Gee I wonder what those families of 8 did back in the 50’s? I mean, there were SO many SUV’s on the road back then…it’s a sad commentary on life today.

        Like

      2. the cars in the 50’s didn’t even have seatbelts! Children rode in floorboards, rear windows, and piled two deep. So are you saying we just toss the car seats and just hold the baby while we drive. While we’re at it I will get rid of the booster seat too oh and why wear seatbelts at all? The kids could just bounce all over the car! Sounds like a great plan! People with SUVs are not the problem and I think it’s great the some people have opted for more “green” options. I may drive an SUV (which has 3 rows of seats and still gets 25 MPG) but I attempt to live more green in other areas of life. We all have to do what we can and no two people can do the exact same things. So while I am here not judging you, why don’t you get on your little bike and not judge me! As for the oil spill, accidents happen and last time I checked a SUV wasn’t out in the middle of the Gulf causing this so back off!

  3. Capricious makes some great points.

I think $4/gallon gas for a sustained period of time is the only thing that will ever change people’s habits for good. Gas comes back down to the mid $2 range and everyone is back to driving the stupid SUV’s. Only a sustained, multi-year period of crushing gas prices will change things.

Why we can’t figure out that natural gas (CNG for vehicles and natural gas for heat), wind and nuclear power (for the power grid to use less oil for electricty) is the answer to the problem I do not understand. Increased offshore drilling is like using a band-aid on a compound fracture.

    1. Maybe for people who don’t have 3 kids or more those little tiny cars are not for families so I will stick with my SUV and i guess i will pay hte price with high fuel prices for one reason IT”S PAID FOR so I don’t see buying another car for fuel economy the I woul have a payment and gas right now i am only paying for the gas which is a little costly but a car payment would be more costly maybe we can all just become amish .Wake up this is 2010 families and compact cars don’t work out so well and besides I feel much safer in that big gas guzzler than in a small car been ther done that not doin it again.I would only consider getting rid of my Tahoe for a newer Tahoe(hybrid would be ok) ,Charger,68 Camaro,4 door ford f series truck, mustang only if it’s a 5.0 must have the older motor from late 80’s or early 90’s or else to slow the new ones suck or a SUBURBAN even bigger than my gas guzzler. Those little bitty cute cars are so not my style I’m from Alabama I gotta have a big truck or SUV.What do you guys think about that and what do you guys drive i don’t think my husband would drive a girlie car and just to make you guys smile a little we not only have SUV’s we also have a 1971 Volkswagon now try to beat the mpg on that it will run for two weeks on $10 but no room for 3 kids so don’t drive it often my 11 year old has made claims to it although i doubt when she is 16 she will even think about drivig it we will see but i do know that her and my boys hate the prius, fit, element, soul,xb and any other car that is similar do you think a 16 year old boy will want a cute little hatchback…LOL besides that would be torture for him.He will be 16 next year i guess we will see whats in store for him if we buy him a prius we might as well paint it pink and put a rainbow on it

    2. “I think $4/gallon gas for a sustained period of time is the only thing that will ever change people’s habits for good.”

I respectfully disagree… Canada has had gas over $4/gallon ($1.10/litre = $4.40/gallon, roughly) for over 5 years and nothing has been done there. Gas in Europe has been over $6, or even $8 in some places, for well over 10 years – though the public transportation system throughout much of the continent is wonderful. As long as people view gas as a necessity and not a luxury, we’ll continue to pay what is asked… though there will be plenty of complaining.

As for those who have 3 kids and can’t cram them into a Prius, I’d like to add those of us, who have large dogs AND kids AND go on vacation a few times a year AND who have to commute where the public transit buses just don’t run, to the list of people who can’t drive clown cars. Fortunately the auto manufacturers are doing more to make the bigger vehicles more fuel efficient.

  5. I don’t believe the explosion on the oil rig that caused this oil spill was an accident. It came immediately after Obama lifted the ban on more drillling for oil offshore, including in the Gulf. There was a reason why both Bush presidents, with their well-known ties to the oil industry and Saudi Arabia, didn’t lift the ban. The timing of this incident was no coincidence and the explosion was no accident. It certainly sent a clear message to the Obama administration. I hope the spill is contained before it reaches PCB but with hurricane season approaching, the damage could be huge. Pray for calm weather.

    1. there are rumors of sabotage and there is also rumor that there were no back up emergency plans for an accident like this which is required by law to be submitted before drilling started is because the MMS employees were taking gifts and bribes and in return they would authorize drilling permission and this is not the first time MMS has been accused and cited for this kind of thing I think BP and MMS are behind this and are at fault and we are being kept in the dark I hope I am wrong .We have a reservation for PCB JUNE 19 I have paid in full and Ihave until May 28 to decide maybe it will be under control before then and it won’t spread any further .You would think the idiots in charge of this disaster who claim to be experts in the oil industry would know at least a little about the oil business and safety plans .This is just like if I a pre-school teacher were to go into an operating room and perform open heart surgery that I know nothing about because that is what is going on here. There is also a rumor that this is not the first time BP has been behind something like this so I am very interested in the outcome of this oil spill. When did Obama lift the ban on drilling?

  6. With the rate of crude coming each day into the gulf and the amount of time, (maybe 3 months), to stop it we can all expect this to be a disaster of an epic proportion. Maybe worse than Katrina and 911 with regards to damage costs. The travel, fishing, etc industries will be gone for a long long time. If it does go for 90 days the west coast of Fl and the Texas coast will be affected too. Gosh I hope I am way off here, but this may become very very serious in a couple of weeks.

    1. It’s very serious now because the damn idots are trying to run a business that they obviously knew nothing about to begin with .If they did this would have been stopped by now .The device they built to cover the broken pipe should have been built before they ever started drilling btu they assured everyone that this could never happen and then they paid people off to allow them to go ahead and drill without an emergency plan that by law sould have been submitted before drilling .I have a feeling when this is over some people at MMS,BP and others are going to be in very hot water I think they should get jail time if they accepted money and gifts in return for permission to start drilling without any safeguars and so now we wait…

  9. hellooo! Even if the oil doesnt reach our beaches we WILL see devastation to our oceans wildlife, and we will be effected. The amount of crude oil Still leaking from the tanker is anormous and may not be stopped for months and if it takes that long it will reach our beaches. we need to prepare for the oil as soon as possible. its better to be overly prepared than not at all and have this destroy our beaches. The writer of this seems like theyre only writing it to bring money and people to our beaches for profit. we need them to come to our beaches and help us save it before its too late.

  12. THEY MUST DO THIS
They have to run the oil boom perpendicular to the beaches to stop the spread eastward. They are now running the oil boom parallel to the beaches. The waves will just wash over them and damage the booms and beach. The oil is getting closer to our beaches. They need to start running the oil boom from the beaches out to the Gulf to stop the spread east ward. The oil skimmers can run up and down the channel created by the booms to collect the oil. The oil boom will handle wave that are a long the length, not against them. STOP the spread eastward now. RUN THE OIL BOOM NORTH TO SOUTH!!! The need to be every run every 10 miles starting off the coast of Mississippi.

  13. Lots of dreaming going on here, as far as cleaning up the oil. Here in FL it will be much less expensive and easier to clean it off the beaches rather than try to clean it out of the water. Its time people except the fact that its going to hit our beaches sooner or later. Maybe not this week, maybe a month from now, but if the leak cant be stopped, and it appears its going to take months to stop it, its a sure bet we get oil here.

  14. G/f and I are due to arrive in PCB (my 2nd home) in July. It’ll be her first time there. I really hope PCB hasn’t been affected by the spill. I believe we will still come, regardless. I saw the beaches look their best in Aug. of 09 and I have been coming there since the early 1980s. I will always love PCB.

Though I don’t drive gas-guzzling SUVs, I still like the option to own one if I choose to do so. Oil, from lubricant for small parts we don’t even think about in everyday items to our trusty vehicles, is always and will continue to be necessary. Everyone uses oil, those who can afford larger vehicles via hard work and sacrifices to be successful, earned the right to use a little more than most. Good for them, not my concern because their money isn’t my money. I recommend we all discipline ourselves, make out own money and mind our own business in general. I don’t harbor ecological guilt and I laugh at those unwise and (typically) hypocritical urban-dwelling environmentalists whose understanding of and dedication to the environment is laughable, sad and insulting at best.

I want drilling despite this incident. I go deep sea fishing via Alabama and I love FL, especially PCB, so I don’t like this incident and I wish for sound drilling practices (not to infer that my view on this particular oil rig was either sound or unsound). Accidents happen in life, nothing is 100% all the time, but we must keep striving in the face of danger for the 100%, things get worse if we don’t. I deal with life day in and day out. Exxon-Valdez spill area has recovered at a much faster rate than originally thought, but no one knows that, they just remember the “poor birdies” and “evil oil companies.” The Earth is more resilient and capable of recovering than the human ego is willing to give it credit for. People should still help clean up after themselves and I pray for the well-being of the Gulf of Mexico, the oil business, the oil workers lost and PCB in all arenas. See you soon PCB, oil or no oil!

Yes hauling three kids around is tough in a tiny car and I had to get a minivan with the arrival of no. 3 this past year too, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could get comfortable cars that had super high mpg ? or ran on something other than oil? Your attitude (and so many like you) of “I pay taxes and I will drive whatever I like” is short-sighted and really is about nothing at all. Typical ranting for no purpose. This is everyone’s problem. I assume you’d like your three kids to breathe fresh air and swim in clean water etc. throughout their lives no?

We might as well live it up in comfort and style while we still have the chance. I agree, anything less than a V8 is completely out of the question. It just wouldn’t be stylish and wouldn’t make a big enough impression on others that may think we are less cool otherwise. Afterall, our vehicle is actually an extension of who we are as a person. How else could people actually judge us accurately at a glance? Mini-vans get much better gas mileage, but they are just bigger versions of clown cars, disguised as a family vehicles that actually makes sense environmentally speaking. Stupid people think they can tell others what to drive! I for one know I am selfish and nearsighted, and anyone that has a problem with it can suck my V8 exhaust! Yea…rednecks rule!

DOnt be so sure about the drill baby drill team.If you will remember obama wanted the coal mines shut down and closed FOREVER, only to have the state of west va go down the drain and the coal mines BLOW UP.NOW he says open the off shore drilling and it also BLOWS UP.I suggest having a investigation done on BOTH sites with someone besides government investigators.Might also take a look at the happenings on 9-11.How do you fly an airplane into a building( the pentagon) and there is NOTHING left of it and how did it make a 20 ft. round hole in ths side of the building?wouldnt the wings fall outside the building? Does the yard swing burn when your home burns to the ground? How about the mailbox, does it burn also?If you will use head other than something to hang your hat on, you will find out that these EXPLOSIONS and such are MAN MADE.Not accidents.?How do you fly another plane into the world trade center and a building down the street falls 12 hours later that is not even attached to this building.I wonder why there were “maintenance teamss” in the building the weekend prior to the explosion and NOONE was allowed inside the entire weekend?.When you have everyone scared, you can pass bills easier taking away their rights.
WOuldnt obama like to destroy the economy of the tourist towns? He is slowely destroying the small business man and woman.WOuldn’t right at the start of tourist season be a wonderful time to keep everyone away?

      1. you read my mind because the MMS who is doing the investigation on the rig are the very one s who are accused of letting BP drill without submitting an emergency plan on what they would do in an incident like this so now we have to wait to see what they come up with.Do they really think that MMS is going to be truthful knowing that their butt is only the line .They have been in trouble before for taking lavish gifts and bribes from other energy companies wake up people this was not just an accident.SOMEBODY knows more than they are letting on and seems to know about things before they happen I gues he is reading his crystal ball or maybe the miror mirror on his wall told him .LOL

    1. There are ligitimate claims for alot of this info do some research you will be surprised at what you might find or just wait and see .Oh thats right we will never know because they ones investigating are the ones who covered up the fact that BP never submitted an emergency plan which was required by law and that they have been cited before for taking lavish gifts and bribes from other companies now do you really think they are going to tell us what they find on that rig site>If so then you are a little to close to those oil fumes coming off that oil spill. They are so gonna cover this up to save their own asses because they are more to nlame than BP because without the approval from them the drilling would have never started never mind the fact that BP has no clue how to stop this or do they. You should not start a project if you don’t know how to control it that would be like me a pre-school teacher performing open heart surgery what a success that would be .If they can’t do the job they should step down and let one of the other oil companies take over I don’t usually buy from BP and now I will not.I think they gotten enough from us.

  20. We’ve already had a couple of folks questioning their vacations. Thanks a lot news media for scaring the vacation and tourism spirit out of our customers. Jumping the gun and crying wolf seems to be all they know how to do. While they wear the mask of concern, they may, or may not, realize the economic damage they do by forecasting unknowns. If we lose $$ due to the oil spill it may not be due to actual damage to our beaches…it may be due to the news networks! I won’t ONLY be going after BP with my lawyer, I’ll be going after the news networks. Thank you so much PCBDAILY for helping your readers and would-be visitors realize that it’s way too early to start canceling their vacations. By the way, anyone ever heard of travel insurance?

    1. People who rent condos from owners don’t have the opportunity to purchase travel insurance. Many people who go to PCB would go on a cruise or somewhere tropical away from the states if they could afford it. That is why PCB is so appealing to people who live close by. It gives everyone’s children the chance to see the ocean. But look at the bright side, I’m from Georgia, so maybe Savannah and Tybee Island will get more business. Your comments were good until the last sentence Ms. Duncan.

We have a reservation in PCB June 19-26 and I have been so stressed about this whole ordeal but we have decided to make the most of our trip.I am prayin that there is no oil and i know that those beautiful beaches are a big attraction and what makes PCB but there is so much other stuff you can do in PCB.My daughter is 11 an dwill absolutely not go anywhere else because they don’t have a PINEAPPLE WILLY”S this will be our htird visit in 5 years and there are still alot of things that we haven’t done and I am sure they have added more since our last trip in 2008.I heard that Peir Park brought back some of the old Miracle strip Rides. When I think about all the people that stand to lose from this my heart breaks because we have been through hard times ourselves so I would just like to say that I urge people to reaaly think about it before they cancel because you may never get another chance and even without hte emerald waters and the sand that make PCB so beautiful there is still SO MUCH TO DO and I am willing to bet you have a pool at your hotel so you can swim there if not at the beach.I love the beach but don’t get in the water to paranoid of jellyfish and sharks and also freak out about dirty water I only get in chlorinated water sounds crazy I know but just give PCB a second chance you might be surprised..

I remember as a child going to France and they had an oil spill and they had said it had been cleared up. well that was a lie the sand soaks up the oil and you sink in it. I stood in an oily part and it went up to my knees it was horrid. so we spent our vacation doing other things than going on the beach

Its those people that are in denial that will hold off on any action causing the beaches to become full of oil, instead of taking action now. Get real people. This is not just affecting those who live on the coast, but everyone who has ever visited the Gulf Shores and those who planned on visiting. My thoughts are Too little has been done to prevent the drifting oil and now its Too late!

    1. I really wouldn’t cancel. There are SO many rumors that are not true. I read a comment that someone posted on a facebook page saying that they could smell the petroleum in Walton County, about a week after the spill. That was ridiculously not true. It’s kind of like when there’s a tropical storm or hurricane in the gulf, and The Weather Channel comes down to broadcast live. They stumble around in the breeze and make it seem so much worse, because that’s what people want to see. That’s news worthy. Meanwhile, residents get to watch that coverage and laugh at the guys that we know are exaggerating on TV (no offense Jim Cantore, PCB loves you!).

  30. ON THE GULF OF MEXICO – A BP PLC official is saying icelike crystals formed inside of an oil containment box when it was placed over a massive oil leak and that crews have had to move the contraption away to study the problem.

Chief operating officer Doug Suttles said Saturday that he is not saying that the box has failed. But he did say what they tried Friday night did not work.

Suttles says the buildup on the specially constructed box made it too buoyant and clogged it up and they’ve set it to the side to study the problem.

Officials had cautioned that they would meet challenges during this unprecedented attempt to divert oil spewing into the waters.

  31. They need to get a REAL submarine with humans onboard. Not some mini remote controlled toy. They have submarines that have recovered items on the Titanic. The Titanic lays at a depth of 12,500 feet. The leak is at 4986 feet. The Mir 1 and Mir 2 can go to a max depth of over 20,000 feet. It has two eternal manipulators that can lay down some form of patch over the leak. At least give it a freaking try! They can easily get to the leaks at 5,000 feet.

The reason Navy divers haven’t been dispatched is b/c the leak is 5,000 feet below sea level. That’s almost ONE MILE below the surface. No human can survive anywhere near that depth — which is why robots are attempting the handiwork. Fathom that!

I now have a renter who is very concerned about the oil spill in the Gulf and says she does not want to cancel her reservation, but wants to know if I have changed any of my rules or policys about cancelling. She claims she has heard that other owners have changed theirs (but has not told me what they are. Does anyone know of changes in policys or contract rules and if so, what changes are owners offering? Please help me if you have any answers. Thank you

  34. Tinker,
I have a reservation for mid-June. I contacted the owner to see if she would be flexible, given the circumstances. She said of course, if the beaches are contaminated or closed, she would give me a full refund. I plan to keep my reservation and go, unless the beaches are closed. Today, it appears that the oil is moving more toward the west. Of course, I realize that could change. Four weeks is a long time for me to watch this unfold, waiting to see if my vacation will happen.

Since the oil spill we have discussed the possibility of canceling and going to SC Beaches or the Rockies. We really feel for the people living on the coast that are affected by this disaster. While we are working people and cannot go to the area to help we can keep our plans and spend our money in their area. We can always swim in the pool and eat steak. We feel this is the most responsible way to help after so many years going to the world’s most beautiful beaches. See you there next week.

  37. Ok everyone can have an opinion about this oil spill no matter what you drive or how you use oil in the first place. More should have been done to prevent this. Forget the fact that oil prices may rise or whatever. How about we think of all the wildlife this is affecting and its all thanks to people wanting oil and money, end of story.

    Like

    1. Hey “concerned”. It concerns me that you’re so worried about the wildlife. 11 men were killed in that explosion. 11 families are devastated. Although wildlife is important, it’s odd that you mentioned that over human life. Also, the U.S. gets 1/3 of it’s oil from our gulf. Why don’t we just eliminate that (and all the jobs that go with it) and become COMPLETELY dependent on foreign oil? That way we don’t have to deal with the people wanting oil and money. Let’s see what that does for our fragile economy.
