UPDATE: Panama City Beach Currently NOT On Oil Spill Trajectory Map

(Latest update: July 15, 2010)

Over the last few weeks, very small quantities of oil product have been reported and cleaned up on Panama City Beach.  And, when I say very small quantities, I mean so small that almost no one saw any oil wash up on the shores of Panama City Beach before it was cleaned up by the 700+ beach clean up workers that continue to patrol the beaches.  In addition to the 700+ workers that are walking the beaches by day, there are around 250 walking the beaches at night.

As of July 14th, the oil plume was located 130 miles from Panama City Beach.  At one point, it was as close as 20 miles off our coast.  What this means is that for the next two to three weeks, our beaches are all but totally guaranteed to be oil free.  This is great for the summer tourism season.  Right now, we are well outside the NOAA 72 hour area of uncertainty.

We are continuing to closely monitor the oil spill situation as it pertains to Panama City Beach.  Here are three ways you can keep up with exactly what’s going on here.  As new information develops, you’ll find out here first:

  • Facebook Page – Facebook.com/pcbdaily
    • can update from anywhere, and will post new developments here first.  We are constantly monitoring for questions and will do our best to answer.
  • Twitter page – Twitter.com/pcbdaily
    • If you are on Twitter, you can follow us for recent updates from on the scene.  We are constantly monitoring our feed for questions and will do our best to answer.
  • YouTube Channel – Youtube.com/pcbdaily
    • Twice a week we are producing HD videos of the beach with a brief update on conditions and showing you in high quality video exactly what the conditions are like.

As of July 15th 2010, there is no oil on Panama City Beach’s waters or shoreline, nor has there been any oil reported in Bay County from the Deep Horizon Oil Spill in several weeks.

Here are some quick facts on the Gulf Oil Spill from Deep Horizon:

  • There is an estimated 35,000 to 60,000 barrels of oil being discharged daily from the Deep Horizon Oil Well.  The “capping stack”, designed to capture greater quantities of oil, was installed on July 12. Additional analysis of the well testing procedure is currently being performed. The next step is a well integrity test, which involves closing one or more of the valves on the new cap for a period of time to allow BP to measure pressures in the well. On July 13 the total oil recovered was approximately 17,060 barrels.
  • There are around 1000 contracted workers locally walking the beach daily looking for oil and cleaning up when product is found.
  • One of the two relief wells being drilled is currently at a depth of 17,810 feet, while the other’s depth is at 16,000.

If you want live information, we’re at the beach every day.

Each week we are shooting videos of the beach showing the current conditions of the water.  Actually, as of the week of June 7th, we are trying to make it to the beach every three days to shoot HD video and every day to do a live streamcast.  Here are the places you can find video of the beach.  (NOTE: Go to our Facebook page and click the “Like” button to be notified when we are doing live stream casts.)

Here is our PCBDaily YouTube channel.

Hit the arrows on the side to scroll through our videos.  Most of the recent ones are of the beach and have been taken in the last couple weeks.  The latest video will be first.

  1. I agree with everyones comments about this being intentional. You will never convince me that with todays modern technology we can’t cap an underwater oil well. It’s been pumping now for 3 weeks, give me a brake! Our Government should have every possible resource on this right now! We capped hundreds of burning oil wells “in another country” when Sudam Hussan bombed them during the gulf war. We capped all of those in a matter of a few weeks. And those were on fire! So either our current Government Administration just doesn’t give a crap about this or their to dumb to realize what the outcome is going to be. I guess the other option is as I mention in the begining IT’S INTENTIONAL. If Obama thinks he can just sit on his hands and leave this to BP to take care of he’d better wake up. His responsivness to this crisis is completely unacceptable. BP couldn’t give two sh### about the Gulf, sea life or our coast lines. They just want the money. BP posted $96 billion dollars in profits last year and they’re whining that they have spent $300 million to try and stop this. Something is very wrong with this whole thing!!!!!

    2. Ditto to Brett’s comment.

If this is as good a response that the offshore drilling industry has to this situation, how on earth were these leases approved by the government in the first place? It is completely and totally unacceptable to take this long to solve this problem. It seems that every solution that I read about is going to take several weeks to implement – where is the planning for an event such as this? Disgusting and unbelievable that this can happen in the United States of America. I have never considered myself an environmentalist before but I sure as hell consider myself one now.

I for one will NEVER, EVER buy gas at a BP station again. Nor will I purchase their stock as an investor (assuming they survive this mess). I would encourage others to do the same – we do have a small degree of power as consumers.

    3. Brett, I’m confused a little, are you saying that the oil well was blown up intentionally or they are intentionally taking too long to stop and clean up the oil spill? I basically agree with most of the comments on this page, just wanted clarification on that issue. Earlier there was someone who posted that North Korea had blown up the oil well in a suicide divers attack. Having trouble swallowing that one.

  6. The leases the govt issues to oil companies to drill on land areso restrictive that it is almost impossible to afford to jump through all the hoops that are required in the hopes that there may be oil on that land. If our government would stop banning the oil companies from drilling on LAND, such as in Alaska which has huge oil reserves, they would not be out in the Gulf drilling with the potential for such disasters. This would be so much easier to cap on land then it is 5,000 ft down in the ocean.

  8. Terry in Dora,
I would like to believe that the well was not intentionally blown up but who knows. What I am saying is there has got to be a very fast method available to cap this well. If you notice all of their efforts have been on how they can capture the oil and pump it up to a barge/tanker, not cap the well. The plans that they have announced so far have all been ways to get the oil. Their last efforts will be to cap it. In the mean time the Gulf is turning into the dead sea.

    1. You can beat some BP bean counter has figured out the unit cost to clean up a gallon of oil is less then the price to capture and refine it……

      Like

    2. I agree wholeheartedly with Brett, in his response that there has been so much effort in capturing the oil already spilled and not so much in capping the well. As you stated, some bean counter is playing God with the environment obviously figuring the most cost-effective way to handle the situation. I believe more onland wells should be projected rather than going for environments like oceanic, which leaks can drastically impact the world environment, wildlife, and even human life. First priority should have been to have made sure there was a backup procedure in place that actually would work to stop wells leaking, etc. @ 5000 feet rather than hoping what was available would work. Second priority, which should have been ongoing from onset of leak discovered, should have been to get that well capped.
As one oyster fisherman stated on report on nbc last night, there have been way too many lies as to how much oil is leaking per day. First it was 5,000 gallons, then 10,000 gallons and now 20,000 gallons.
BP has been dragging its feet. The federal government has been dragging its feet to the point that now Louisiana has major problems – long term problems and the Louisiana governor took upon himself to stop waiting on the federal government to do what should have already been done and he issued the order this week on his own.
Having been involved in NOAA conservation issues when I lived in Florida, I’m so glad that Florida did not follow suit behind Alabama, Mississppi and Louisiana and Texas to allow off-shore drilling in state waters. When I moved here to Texas in 95, I took a trip to Corpus Christi/Aransas Pass and Port Aransas. I was devastated to see the nasty oily water here. I had to go down South Padre Island all the way to the Federal SeasShore to actually start seeing cleaner water and whiter beaches. I’m glad that the conservationists in Florida did discourage the legislators there to not let any offshore oil drilling go on in Fl state waters or the beautiful white sugar beaches in Panama City area would look like the nasty ones here in TX.

Are you kidding me? There’s a reason why the oil is still pumping! So lets wake up people! It’s one well! Are they telling us that they can’t stop one oil well in four weeks? HELLO! Does anyone other then me see something wrong with this picture?

We need to start questioning our government and stop fearing them. They need to start fearing the american people that they work for! Many are beginning to feel this pain in our local elections. Can everyone say bye bye dems…:)

  12. Bigmacrob,

Based on some of your previous comments I’m assuming your last one was a joke. Speaking of creating new jobs from this spill you are right. It will take alot of effort and man power to clean this up. I’ll give you an example of the problem with that though. I’ve been going to PCB for the last 17 yrs. I’ve seen alot of the new high rises being built over the years. Two years ago we were walking past some being built. I didn’t hear one construction worker on that job site that could speak english! I take that back. There were two, one was the supervisor and the other was an interpetur. I spoke with an off duty immigration officer while fishing on the peir. I asked how is it possible for all of the illegal immigrants to be openly working like that? His answer blew me away! He said it was a violation of their rights and against the law for him to even ask for their green cards. “AGAINST THE LAW” That just seems crazy to me. Just my opinion. Sooooooooooo, I’m wondering who will actually get all of those clean up jobs. An illegal immigrant making $7.00 an hour or a US citizen working for Waste Management making say $12.50 an hour?

Yeah you called it……I was indeed attempting a little levity….I dont care for all things political.
That being said for a period of about 15 years (90-05′) in my life I traveled the SW and managed numerous Govt TOC & JOC construction type projects (not hard bid). There is no doubt in my mind that by primarily utilizing a hispanic work force millions of dollars in labor costs (tax dollars) were saved. Why? their attitude and appreciation for a freaking job. I wish I could say they were legalized US citizens but to be honest I am not so sure they all were and even further being honest, I didnt really care. It was sad to see what the US work force had become.
One observation I have made in this down economy, the improved appreciation for employment by the avreage US worker. Oops there I go again, looking at the bright side of a negative situation 🙂 🙂 🙂

We have been here since Monday and the beaches are beautiful, there are no crowds, no long lines, great food, great prices and perfect weather. No rain. I honestly cannot think of a better time to come to PCB. You can tell that business is really down and they need you to come on down and spend your money. I can tell you honestly that mine has been well spent this week. Can’t think of a better way to help the guys on the Gulf than to operate business as usual. Don’t know when the oil is coming, if ever, but it is wonderful here right now.

  14. I have been reading all the news coming out of Panama, how the oil spill has created an impact on tourism. I think it is anybody’s guess what will happen so it is a risk to me, as a tourist and the industries. However, after seeing that some business are trying to reassure their guest and are offering a $200 voucher if the oil does wash up on the beaches and others suggest that vacationers purchase travel insurance, has only made me more nervous. I just read the travel insurance terms, and if I am reading it right then it would not cover an oil spill, so what good would that do to purchase it. The voucher offer is not clear because it may have restrictions or blackout dates; I certainly would not want to only be able to use it in the off season. I have vacationed in other places, and have gotten a refund, once for a child being very sick and the other because of a death in the family. So, I am not willing to book anything just yet and take a chance on losing any money and I think a lot of other people feel the same way.

  19. Panama City Beach has been a part of my life for over 40 years. My parents brought me here every year as a child, and now, my children have grown to love it. The grim fact regarding the BP oil spill is that it WILL eventually devastate every inch of Florida’s coastline, including the Atlantic side. Florida’s economy will collapse. My message to all Floridians is to start a war- like effort to attack the oil slick out at sea, versus waiting until it hits the sand. The Lousiana coastal Parishes have been abandoned by the U.S. Government, as the oil kills their marshes and ecosystem. No effort is being made to reomve the oil. The oil will never go away on its own. The Goverment sprayed dispersant so the oil would sink, and become unseen by satellites. The oil covers a much larger area than what you are seeing. A much larger mass is underwater. The money given to the State of Florida for advertising should have been used to attack the oil slick. Everyone is worried about this season’s tourism revenue, versus the next 30 years. Why isn’t the U.S. Government filling up the Gulf of Mexico with thousands of ships, vacuuming up the oil? This disaster will be worse than a nuclear strike by a terrorist group, in terms of devasation. How many suicides will occur due to business people and residents filing for bankrupcy? Will coastal residents be forced to evacuate due to oil vapors and fumes? It could be millions. Wake up and start screaming now! Everyone is in a passive mode. The American people are being treated like fools. Read this scary CNN article: http://money.cnn.com/2010/05/26/news/economy/gulf_economy/index.htm

  21. DL,
Sorry for the late response. Went camping for Memorial Day. I worked for Delphi for years and the last five years I spent working with a young girl from Europe. She transfered from another Delphi plant and was trying to get her US citizenship. It took her 5 years to get it. She earned it and deserved it. I have nothing but respect for her.To me it doesn’t matter where you are from. Europe, Mexico, China, anywhere outside of this country. If you want to live here, you better have respect for this country and you better have earned your right to live here. So if the hotel workers that you are speaking of have earned the right to be a US citizen, then I’m happy to have them. If not, then they should get the hell out! Those jobs should be filled by legal US citizens period! Or at the very least by someone who is here legally and going through proper channels to become a citizen. Hopefully that answers your question!

I booked a condo. They don’t usually give 24 hour cancellations like the hotels as they are privately owned “apartments”. Hotel rooms do that. they get many people tat stop by without reservations and can easily fill empty rooms. Condos dont work that way. however, all of the condos i know of will offer full refund if beaches close so there will be no swimming in oil for anyone. it’s unfortunate for so many travelers to be sitting on the edge of their seat about their summer vacations as well as all the locals that thrive on the tourist business. I hope BP pays severely for this. Everyone should avoid BP gas stations. Just my opinion

But I truly feel awful for the people whose jobs and livelihoods depend on the tourism that will disappear if the beaches are fouled. I can take a vacation someplace else next year, but the folks who live there are facing a life-altering situation, not to mention the environmental affect.

  30. I continue to see the same question over and over again. When is it going to hit PCB? To me the question should be, when is it going to stop? I’ll tell you when I think it will stop! It will be capped when BP is out of money and in need of a bailout. When BP yells uncle the well will be capped and our new government administration will be the major share holder in BP. They’ve already done it to GM, the banks, and the morgage companies. Is everyone aware that our Federal Government currently owns over 90% of all home and company morgages? How about all of the car dealerships that were forced out of business and then the ones that remained were given the “cash for clunkers” plan. We now have our medical treatment controled by them as well. Does anyone besides me see a trend here? If you’ve ever studied history you will see that what is going on “RIGHT NOW” is the same thing that Hitler did to Germany and Stalin did to Russia. Devestate the economy and create a nation of citizens that are totally dependent on the government to survive. As I mentioned in my very first comment on this page. That well is still pumping for a reason! As Hitler once said “Never fail to take advantage of a good disaster”. Has anyone else noticed all of the anti-gun bills that they are trying to push through right now? They’re using this oil spill as smoke and mirrors! Like I said that well is still pumping for a reason! Apparently Obama studied his history lessons! Hopefully I’m wrong but I don’t believe that I am. There is no way that anyone will ever convince me that we do not have the technology to cap this well right now! As Obama said during his campaign. We live in the greatest country in the world, now “Come help me change it”. And the crowd stood up and clapped! Are you kidding me!!!!! My jaw hit the floor.
Maybe some of you think that I’m way off. But think about this.
They own Gm, the largest auto maker in the world. They own the banks. (your money) They own all of the Morgage companies. (your home or business) They just took over the Medical industry. (your health, that we didn’t even get a chance to vote on). Why wouldn’t they go after the oil companies next? (your transportation to work. Not to mention the food that is transported to the stores) And now they’re trying to slip all of these gun bans through so you won’t be able to stop them.
Like I said before. Create a nation of citizens that is totally dependent on the Government to survive!

I am now looking at perhaps South Padre Island or Daytona Beach. Not really much sense on still going down to PCB if we can’t swim or if we have to smell toxic fumes. Good luck.

  34. Bigmacrob,
All I can say is for you to do a little research of your own. Don’t take my word for it. That’s why we have history books, read some. Uninformed people tend to make pretty poor choices. The whale and the dolphin thing is out of the question. We don’t have any here in Michigan. I’ll work on the bird thing though. Pheasant season is just around the corner and they taste great.

I say we need to start a Change America campaign and send Oil bama back from where he came from.

    1. Ok Bret, I will hit the history books….

So you are from Michigan…..’if’ we cancel our PCB vacation we are looking at heading North instead to a place called South Haven….apparently my son-n-law vacationed there a few years ago and highly recommends it. Since you dont seem to mind offering an opinion:)……would you recommend it?

  35. we are planning to leave for pc beach in the morning hoping that the oil doesnt effect our week there we have been planning for months to go to navaree and today we received a call from the condo saying that their was oil and oil balls on the beach and if we stayed their would be a major fee for any oil tracked into their condo so we have cancelled and booked a place in pc. hopefully it will turn out as a good week with clean waters.

    1. My family is set to leave for PCB on Sunday morning. We had planned to go to Destin but cancelled an decided to go further east. My youngest son has never seen the beach. I hope it’s clean and oil free too. Good luck on your vacation.

  36. I just left PCB this morning after a week and the beaches were beautiful. No sign of oil or any odd smell. It was the best week I’ve ever had at PCB as far as the sand, water and weather. I hope it stays that way for everyone else.

  37. Yeah, so if there is oil on vacation you should go somewhere else.. Don’t do the right thing and help out in this Disaster…. Lord knows that you wouldn’t want help either if you were in a bad situation.. Helping wildlife and making a difference would just suck for a vacation.. screw the seagulls, pelicans, etc…. I’ll just lay back and complain………………………..

  38. Robert and Kevin,
Thanks for the support. I think in the next few years a lot more people may wake up. By then it will probably be to late though.

    Bigmacrob,
South Haven is very nice. It’s not PCB by any means, but nice.
