“Clean, safe and open for business,” were the words spoken by our nation’s First Lady, Michelle Obama, as she stood on Panama City Beach’s shores on her visit to the area. The visit came on a day when the beach was beautiful, gorgeous blue skies hung cloudless above and the presence of our First Lady shined a spotlight on a city and an area in need of good coverage. Celebrate Panama City Beach!
I have always loved the quote, “The more you CELEBRATE the more you have to CELEBRATE” As I was taking my early Sunday gratitude walk on our beautiful white sand beaches with waves lapping at my ankles I was celebrating every step. Now is a great time to think GRATITUDE for all that we have in Panama City beach and all the good in our lives that we can turn around and share with others. I am sure that many of you know people that make complaining an art form and can go from distress to disaster in a matter of moments but it is my hope that is not our life plan. Pier Park is getting it's Own Beach!
If you’ve been wandering Pier Park in Panama City Beach in the last couple weeks, you’ve probably noticed they’re moving a lot of dirt across the street from Miracle Strip @ Pier Park and east where the sand volleyball court is. This large swath of undeveloped land has been waiting for something exciting to occupy it since the beginning of Pier Park, and it finally has a future.
In a few weeks time, the fine folks at Pier Park will be moving in 3,600 tons of “Emerald Coast Beach Quality White Sand”, creating a real white sand beach in Pier Park, with all the fun except the water. To keep everyone cool in our hot Florida sun they’ll be putting in four 40′ by 40′ staggered canvas shade structures that will be supported on all four corners by brightly colored poles of varying heights. If you’re trying to get a mental image, picture the shade structures they have at the pool at Frank Brown Park, in Panama City Beach.
Some of the activities to take place in this new beach include shell digs, treasure hunts, archeological dig (sponsored by the Jr. Museum – still tentative right now though), sand sculpture contests, corn-hole toss games, and tons of other games the talented staff of Pier Park can dream up of.
So get your flip-flops ready, put on your shades, pack your beach towels and come on out to Pier Park, and don’t forget to say hi when you see me lounging in my beach chair.

An Update on Grand Lagoon Construction
Since the groundbreaking ceremony back in October 2009, work on the Grand Lagoon Bridge and the surrounding area has been going exactly to plan. The 18 month project is right on track, and set for completion in April 2011. This is great news, especially as traffic problems due to the construction have been minimal, and overall vehicles are flowing well through the area with little to no delays. A new turn lane that has been put in place at the Curve is helping the situation immensely, and the City and County are working together to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. July 4th Oil Spill Forecast for Panama City Beach
With torrential rain and huge surf all week from the late hurricane Alex, spending time outside this week was almost as impossible as it was on the insanely hot days of last week. With that, minimal oil product has been reported or needing to be cleaned up on the beach in the last two weeks. The beaches have remained clean, and what product that has come ashore has been cleaned up within hours. Not once has landfall been that to where beach closure was warranted.
Easterly and southeasterly winds have continued to keep the plume away from us. As of right now, we are not within the NOAA projected 72 hour of uncertainty. This is good news for those that are wanting to come down for the Annual Fourth of July Celebrations that take place at Pier Park every year. At this point, all Florida beaches are open, and the beaches in Panama City Beach are looking amazing.
