After months of waiting to hear news of the pending claim filed over losses in tax revenue during the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, BP offered a claim settlement to Panama City Beach City Council Members, with a respectable $1.2 million payout.
The question to ask now is how the City is planning on utilizing the money. At the moment, mention has been made that the current goal is to put the money towards completing projects the City didn’t have funds for previously.
Practical, yes. But dull. Secretly, I can’t help wishing that they were planning some crazed celebration, complete with ninjas and a fireworks display that spells out “Suck it BP!” during the grand finale.
Overall, the news of BP’s offer and the City’s acceptance of it, holds hope that perhaps now we can focus our attention on the future, allowing us to move forward in anticipation of the coming 2011 season.

This is a very tricky subject for me to reply too, knowing that whatever I type will probably offend someone but, here goes.
This being quite a sizable amount of funds BP has “offered” PCB for loss of tax revenue, offered is not a check in the hand as of yet although in the last of this article you do mention the city has accepted this offer… right?
I’m wondering yes, how will these funds be spent and on what projects?
I’m also wondering out of all the condo, business facilities, restaurants etc. owners that may have filed claims such as this….. are they too going to receive funds for their claims?
It is a bad thing here that any money be accepted either way as I see it. When you accept funds such as these “someone” down the line must pay the price for this & it is usually the public who do this as a “whole”. No money is free or funds ever given to people without someone paying the high price “economy wise” for this.
We were in PCB many times through out the Spring/Summer/Fall vacationing & not at any time was our trips harmed in any way by BP.
As I still see it the “Media” TV news did more harm to PCB visitors than BP ever did…… resulting in utter panic with families planning trips, planning to purchase condos etc. This to me is why PCB may have lost revenue through out this ordeal…… it certainly did not harm the beaches in any way.
If these funds are received I sure hope they will be put to good use and BP thanked for them, you might thank the general public also as they will be paying for this 1.2 million payout!

I fully understand what you’re saying! I think it’s a tricky subject, no matter what the stand point is. Whenever politics and money show up in a topic, it’s always bound to be a bit sensitive. That being said, I think you have an excellent view point and wonderful questions. I’ve been wondering the same thing, and I’m sure others have as well (regarding the spending of the funds)- hopefully we’ll have more information on this in the coming weeks. Thank you for posting!

I’m really surprised that no one posted on this article as important as it is, people surly surprise me. As we both said it is a sensitive subject & many may feel reluctant to say anything. Guess that’s not me, I’m never too reluctant to speak or type my feelings.
I would also like to add I’m most happy that I am not on the receiving end when these checks are passed out…… I really do not think I could accept them under these circumstances. Meaning….. Fellow PCB members, owners, residents…… Look on to the West far away from PCB, there you will see the people, businesses, residents and most important the beaches/aquatic life that need these funds!

We need to beautify the roadways and put palm trees on route 98. From the Inlet at Camp Helene to the Hathaway Bridge. They need to put up high fences along the road near trailer parks in laguna beach. The are looks run down. We really need this place to look like San destin. There is no reason why it should be the best tourist location

The ones that filed proper claims have been and will continue to receive funds.

In this particular case the money comes from BP expected profits

That’s because you did not have a “horse in the race”, most had a terrible year financially.

Thank BP, you have to be kidding!! No matter what they end up paying out it will not make our Gulf whole, you only visit then turn around and go home, many of us will be dealing with this disaster for years to come.
