I see sunshine on a cloudy day

_mg_0611_2

This morning I awoke to a dark and dreary day.  With complete cloud cover the rain poored, suplimenting the watering my sprinkler was giving my lawn.  With windshield wipers blading the water off windshields cars hummed down the street with their lights on.

The last couple of days have been nothing short of fantastic here in Panama City Beach.  Weather like we’ve had the past couple of days serve as a clear reminder of why living here is just so great.  With humidity levels low, the sun has been out backed by the only thing that is better than a clear blue sky: a clear blue sky with defined, whispy white clouds carefully accenting particular parts of space.  The high yesterday was 75.  Awesome.

_mg_0631_2Last night a front moved through during the early hours of the morning and dumped an always much needed drink of water on our lush local environ.  And yes, I just created my own word.  We got about an inch this morning. But, just around lunch time, the rain clouds went away and the sun peeked out.

I was told that we would have cold rainy weather the next couple of days, but thank goodness they were wrong; at least for now.  Currently it is 76 outside, sunny and dry.

If you live here, go outside and enjoy this weather.  Many should be so lucky.

Local Businesses gather at Baja Grill

012309_chamber_1Last Thursday, I joined some of the 980 Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce members that flooded Pier Park for an after hour meet and greet, hosted by Baja Grill. The atmosphere exuded an enlivening blend of jovial comradery with subtle networking. Crowds flocked the open bar and full gourmet buffet; enjoying dishes such as herbed lamb, cheesecake and shrimp primavera.

Guests participated in a raffle, complements of Regions Bank. Some went home winners, others not so lucky.  In addition to various other items, a lime green bike was raffled to promote the bank’s new “green” account programs.  This is dueling fitting as Regions’ trade color is green.

012309_chamber_3I had the opportunity to speak with a few business owners. The first was Bobby Griggs, who has run The Beach Butlers (out of Rosemary Beach) with her husband Jeff for around five years now. The Beach Butlers make coming here on vacation one step easier, eliminating the need for those late first night shopping trips to be sure you don’t go without the essentials, and non-essentials.  “You enjoy the shore, while we stand in line at the store.”

Some of the more recent additions to Pier Park include Solace Day Spa and Salon and Massage Envy. Solace has been open in Rosemary Beach for six years, but owner Jennifer Staerker decided it was time to open her second location in Pier Park just last year.

As far as expanding to Pier Park-  I moved to the area in 2000 and i have watched the Panama City Beach area grow over the years.  We have had wonderful success with Solace at our Rosemary Beach location and many of our guests are from the Panama City Beach area.  When the opportunity to expand Solace and Aveda to the Beach to make it more convenient for our beach locals and visitors…Pier Park was a natural fit.  As an Aveda Lifestyle Salonspa, Solace is about quality, customization and creating an experience for the guest.  Pier Park shares the same philosophy. ~ Jennifer Staerker

Pier Park’s Massage Envy, owned by Lynny Conklin, is also rather new and will celebrate one year of business in March. Offering health and wellness through thearaputic massage, they give locals, tourists and shoppers alike a way to unwind and relax.

With so many new businesses on the rise and the busy season only a few months away, PCB’s economic future looks to be a bright one.

Beckrich Road CRA Update

I know what you are thinking – what’s this rubbish.  Why is jason posting pictures of plantlife, is he going all botanical and what-not?  This my friend is a picture of the new shrubbery planted in the median of Beckrich Road.  That’s right, they have plantlife in the median.  Panama City Beach is moving on up in this world.

Started in September 2007, the Beckrich Road portion of the CRA is coming closer to completion each day.  On schedule to be done by May, landscaping is being installed and final measures are taking place on the original, yet newly rehashed side of the road.

The final product will be four lanes of landscaped, medianed, sidewalked, street lamped roadway extending from Back Beach Road to Front Beach Road going through the intersection of Middle Beach Road or Hutchison Boulevard.  All existing underground utilities were replaced and all electrical utilities were moved underground.

The east side of the stretch of Beckrich south of Middle Beach Road is dirt right now with preparations being made for paving.

This is what we can expect all of the main travel coridors of Panama City Beach to look like.  All along Front Beach Road, the power and phone lines will be moved underground, the street will be widened and sidewalks and landscaping will be installed along the sides.

It is Freezing this Morning in Panama City Beach

I looked out in the back yard this morning, and to my surprise, I found beautiful icicles hanging from one of the trees.  As I walked into my garage and got into my car, I noticed the temperature gauge was at a brisk 50 degrees, but when I started driving down Back Beach Road, I watched as the temperature gauge dropped digit by digit until finally coming to a rest at 33 degrees.  Burrrr.

Grand Lagoon

It’s good to be back after the holidays.  Hope everyone has a wonderful and prosperous new year.

Wild life is abundant in the lagoons and bayous surrounding PCB.  This photo shows a Great Egret on the prowl in the salt grass marshes close to Bay Point.  Great egrets are plentiful in Grand Lagoon, especially in the shallow flats on either side of the main boating channel.

Take it slow the next time you’re headed out to the Gulf and observe the beauty above the water.

Ultra-Modern Design comes to Laguna Beach

_mg_6324_2wtmkAs I pull into the driveway, I’m greeted by the charm of old-style cottage and contemporary modern blended together in this new world Laguna Beach Cottage. Covering the driveway and sidewalk areas are Florida native pebbles and small rocks that provide an aesthetically pleasing affordable alternative to concrete.  “I’m a sucker for modern, utilitarian architecture and loved the charm of Laguna Beach,” said David Reich, owner and designer of the newest home in Laguna Beach on the west end of Panama City Beach.

_mg_6243_2wtmkThe front door and accompanying windows, in addition to the back door and accompanying windows can all be covered by a sliding corrugated aluminum door.  “The whole house is hurricane proof,” said Reich, “all the windows are impact resistant, and the front and back of the house with the most windows can be easily covered.”

The doors are of his design.  He was trying to think of an easy solution to protect the windows in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm with out having to round the house bolting on planks or special and expensive shutters.  They have rollers on the bottom and glide on sliders that secure the door on the top.  On each side, there is a slide-bolt to keep it in place as the wind picks up.

_mg_6299_2wtmkThat same corrugated aluminum paneling adorns various other parts of the exterior finish.

Reich’s family has deep roots in Laguna Beach.  Having owned property in that area for years, his wife has ties to Laguna Beach from 1938.  This modern cottage is built on a ‘half-lot’ sized 50×65.

For years he had wanted to build something on this lot, and finally, in July 2007, his dream had become a reality with the permits being approved.

_mg_6294_2wtmkHe’d always wanted something modern, utilitarian, efficient and awesome looking.  The end result is a modern cottage constructed of Transconsteel planks with bare concrete floor, exposed wood cabinets, high ceilings, and very tall walls.

“The whole house is an igloo,” said Reich.  “Insuring was odd at first because the house is so resistant to everything the agent we were working with almost didn’t know how to handle it, our premium ended up being less than $750 a year.”  The house is hurricane, mold and termite proof with the only wood being in the trim work.

_mg_6260_2wtmkThe Transconsteel planks consist of a steel frame filled with polystyrene foam.  The outside is covered in stucco and the inside is sheet-rocked. The whole house was dried in in a week with the help of 5 guys and is held together with over 26,000 stainless steel screws.

Riech’s goal, along with his wife’s was to create an ultra modern look, hanging track halogens and a ceiling fan from an exposed steel beam in the main living area accented by an exposed a/c and heating duct.

_mg_6267_2wtmkAll the furnishings were purchased from IKEA.  “I fit everything in this house in the back of my suburban and drove straight from Atlanta.”

The whole house, including everything down to the furnishings including the pool but not the land cost $170 per square foot to build.  The energy bills are usually less than $100 and is perfect for beach-goers and loungers alike.

_mg_6314_2wtmkThe wade pool in the back is lit and accompanied by modern landscaping, flat surfaces, an outside shower and a chain to guide roof run-off water into a hammered finish, rock-filled pot.

The whole house was built with efficiency in mind.  The washer/dryer unit is located outside the heated and cooled space so as to iliminate heat disapation inside and keep inside cool.
