Pier Park Beach Ball Drop Video

Pier Park’s Beach Ball Drop in Panama City Beach was a huge success with thousands in attendance from all over the south-eastern United States.  The CVB’s marketing blitz covered our drive-to market while locals attended in droves.

I had a blast there with my buddy Lou shooting the whole event and have actually spent probably 12 hours reviewing and editing to get just over 5 minutes of reliving the New Year’s Eve Party on Panama City Beach.

The original version was about 8 minutes long, but I edited it down to really focus on the action. I hope that this brings back some of the emotion of the night for those of you that were there, and for those that were not there, I hope this depicts what an awesome time it truly was.

I want to thank Pier Park’s Felecia Cook for all the hard work that she and her assistant, Ashley Capps did to pull this great event off.  With the help of the PCB CVB and the local tourism industry, this is sure to be a grand tradition that we will all enjoy for years to come.

Enjoy the video.

Ideas for the New Panama City Beach Web Site

The new web site for Panama City Beach should be pretty sweet.  Ok, now that I’ve secured my insecurity regarding my terminal uncoolness, lets get right down to it.

Participants heralded from all walks of the hospitality and tourism industry in PCB.  The audience was spotted with community leaders such as Jack Bishop and Buddy Wilkes and the little guys such as individual condo owners, and was chaired by Jennifer Barbee from JBInc.

The idea behind the meeting was to brainstorm with the local tourism industry on what they liked and disliked about the current web site and what their expecations were with the new web site.

Some of the ideas were:

  • Come up with a categorization process or criteria for events posted on the events calendar.  CJ Ryan had mentioned that there is a distinct difference between events and specials and that should be discerned on the calender.  There was actually a lot of discussion about the calender.  I agree with CJ, and disagree at the same time.  I think there should be a discernment between events and specials (meaning 2 for 1 drinks and where ever), but I don’t see any reason why they should not be on the same calendar.  I think anything dated should be in the same place so the user doesn’t have to look in multiple places to see what is happening on what date.
  • One of the participants suggested having a Craig’s List of sorts for PCB where travelers could post their needs and resorts could respond.  I don’t see how this would work, logistically.
  • Using Niche content – users would arrive at the site and gently be asked a series of questions so the site could get a feel for who they are.  After a few questions, the user would be directed to a series of custom pages that would be populated based on the answers to their questions.  I’ve seen this before and it is a very powerful way of guiding the user to the parts of the web site that would best convert the user into money.  These processes usually include pretty detailed site flow traffic.  This would enable us to tweak all the varying elements of the site to make the presentation more effective.  We need to be moving in this direction.
  • Part of the previous section includes feeding the user accommodations options based on their input.  Other suggestions included a way for people to search by varying criteria such as “indoor pool”, or “pet friendly”, etc.
  • There was discussion about offering package deals
  • The audience talked about having an online booking engine.  There are good arguments for and against this as it effects the varying aspects of the local tourism industry in myriad ways.  Jennifer ultimately said that having a booking engine on the actual destination site historically hasn’t been real effective but was willing to explore that option further.
  • It was discussed to tailor the events calendar based on user input – again, going back to the Niche content.
  • Discussed was user-derived content such as photos, e cards and video.  This could possibly include a user generated content community.  Another local site has done this and the execution was done very well.  I think this is a necessity as we move forward.  We need to seriously consider having a user community where people can create profiles, chat in forums, IM each other, and post pictures and video.  It wouldn’t be very difficult to implement a verification, screening, or moderation process to ensure that less favorable or unsuitable material wouldn’t make it live.  People are dying to post their videos and picture of the beach in a place that others that share their same passion can view them.  The trick is marketing the whoopsidoodle out of it and consistency.
  • Of course, the whole site would need to be set up with RSS, with feeds specific to all the varying categories of  content, maybe even custom feeds generated on the fly based on user input (is that possible?  surely some genius can figure that out).
  • Online chat was suggested where visitors could chat with a live person about the area.
  • Video based promotion and a web cam.  The TDC/CVB currently has a web cam but is cannot be viewed from the visitpanamacitybeach.com web site, it goes through WeatherBug, or something like that.  Also talked about was “man-on-the-street” video covering happenings in Panama City Beach.  This is great, but one has to be careful to not make it TOO “man-on-the-street”.  The News Herald is guilty of often posting videos that are so terrible that you can’t hardly tell what they are saying.  Sorry NH, but you’ve got to buy a better video camera, a microphone, and some skills!  I still love you guys though.
  • Capability for the vendors to login and manipulate their information on the site, i.e. pictures, copy, specials, etc.
  • Continue meeting in workshops to keep up with industry needs.

All in all, there were some great ideas and a good platform has been made for a great web site.  Jenn Barbee is sharp and I’m excited to see what we get.

Huge Country Name Played at Tootsies in Pier Park

010509_jamey_johnsonSinger/songwriter and Grammy nominee, Jamey Johnson played at Tootsies in Pier Park Friday night.  “His guitarist called me at 4 pm and asked if they could play that night,” said Stephen Dibble, “they ended up staying and playing two sets, it was a great night.”

Tootsies Orchid Lounge originated in Nashville, TN and was made popular by their openly encouraging artists to just “stop by” and play a set.  With roots that include country music legends such as Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings, today, it isn’t uncommon for big-name artists to drop in for a “hollar and a swallar.”

With the birth of Pier Park, Tootsies realized the perfect opportunity to expand into a growing area and be a part of a development unlike anything in Northwest Florida.  Pier Park brings tremendous adventure to all those that are wanting to shop, eat, be entertained or take part in an awesome New Year’s Eve party.

The customary norm that has made Tootsies so famous in Nashville has rubbed off on our little location in Panama City Beach with the appearance of Jamey Johnson Friday night.  I can’t say with confidence that he is the first big name that has dropped in, but I can say that he is a high profile and very talented artist.

Currently he is ranked in the top ten on Billboard.com for country songs and is expected to grow in popularity in the coming weeks.  A few weeks back, he appeared on the David Letterman show and has made several “best” lists in 2008 including Rolling Stone’s Best Albums of 08, AOL’s Best Album, New York Times Best Album list, DallasNews.com best CD and tons more.

Talking to Stephen, he said that the touring season starts in a couple months and we should expect more artists of this caliber this season.  I’m currently working with Tootsies to keep all of you up to date as to what is happening there.  If you haven’t been, you should check it out.  I was there New Year’s shooting some footage (forthcoming) and it was so packed, we could hardly move.

Pier Park Ready for New Year's Bash

_mg_7137_2I was out at Pier Park today scoping the grounds for our live production tommorrow for the first ever Panama City Beach New Year’s bash that is being presented by Margaritaville.

Pier Park has done an amazing job of putting together a great party for everyone in Panama City and Panama City Beach to enjoy.  I was talking to Berna-Liza, Sales and Marketing Manager for Margaritaville and remarked that this is the first time Panama City Beach (as long as I’ve been here) has done something like this that the whole community can come together and celebrate this once-a-year holiday.

There will be something for everyone.  If you are a drinker, there will be tons of places to party, if you are a family person, there will be bouncy houses and open areas to play, if you are a loner, there will be tons of people there to keep you company.  I love it, I can’t hardly think about sleeping tonight.

The family time, from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, will play host to stilt walkers, face painters and live music playing on the main boardwalk area AND in the open area in front of Bootleg BBQ and Starbucks.  Then, at 9 pm, the countdown party will begin with more live music and prizes given away from the stage in front of the beach ball every 20 minutes.

The beach ball is an illuminated 8 foot ball with the Pier Park logo on it that will be suspended 120 feet in the air.  As midnight approaches, it will be lowered by a winch, ringing in the new year.  At the exact moment the ball hits the ground, fireworks will shoot off on the beach just next to the pier that is currently under construction.

I’ll be there, along with a buddy of mine, Lou Columbus, shooting video, taking pictures and having a grand ‘ol time.

See you at Pier Park!

PCBDaily LIVE VIDEO at Pier Park for New Year's Eve Bash

That’s right, you read correctly. We’re moving on up in this world.  We will be broadcasting live from Pier Park in Panama City Beach on New Year’s Eve.

So, if you have nothing else to do but sit in front of your computer on New Year’s Eve, then you can spend it with me at Pier Park.  We’ll be doing a live video starting every hour on the hour beginning at 5 pm.  Each broadcast will be a minimum of 5 minutes.  We’ll have some guests on the show, and we will be video taping all the action.

The first annual New Year’s bash at Pier Park is sponsored by Panama City Beach’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Margaritaville.  With live entertainment, dazzling holiday lights, and a fireworks display, this will be the place to be in Panama City Beach on New Year’s Eve.

Starting at 5:30 and going until 8 will be family time.  There will be bouncy houses from Beach Bouncers, stilt walkers, live entertainment, face-painters and more.  At 9 pm the countdown party will begin with the climax at the Beach Ball drop and a spectacular fireworks display.

Of course I will get the whole event on video, from all around Pier Park.

In order to view the live feeds, go to the TV page.  Also on the TV page, I will put up a tentative schedule in the next two days.

Dune Enhancement, Vegetation Planting, Sand Fencing – TDC Seek's Comments

The Bay County TDC is planning a dune enhancement project for Panama City Beach. This project is in the design phase, and the Bay County TDC is seeking comment on the design from the community. The TDC anticipates construction of the project in fall 2009, and project funding will originate from local bed tax dollars (beach nourishment fund) and a state cost-sharing grant.

In general, the project will include planting vegetation only for areas that have significant dunes, sufficient beach width, and/or existing sand fencing. In areas that lack a significant dune but have sufficient beach width, the project will include planting vegetation and constructing sand fencing.

The idea is to protect our beach against natural erosion and help beautify the very thing that makes our area so awesome.  We need to protect our sand dunes.

The draft plans for the dune vegetation and sand fencing project can be reviewed online by clicking here or a hard copy of the plans can be reviewed at the Bay County TDC at 17001 Panama City Beach Pkwy, Panama City Beach, FL 32413.

These plans are preliminary and designed for comment from the Panama City Beach Gulf side property owners and the Bay County TDC. In particular, please contact the Bay County TDC at 850-233-5070 if you are a Gulf side property owner, and you do NOT desire vegetation planted and/or sand fencing constructed as proposed.

Ultra-Modern Design comes to Laguna Beach

_mg_6324_2wtmkAs I pull into the driveway, I’m greeted by the charm of old-style cottage and contemporary modern blended together in this new world Laguna Beach Cottage. Covering the driveway and sidewalk areas are Florida native pebbles and small rocks that provide an aesthetically pleasing affordable alternative to concrete.  “I’m a sucker for modern, utilitarian architecture and loved the charm of Laguna Beach,” said David Reich, owner and designer of the newest home in Laguna Beach on the west end of Panama City Beach.

_mg_6243_2wtmkThe front door and accompanying windows, in addition to the back door and accompanying windows can all be covered by a sliding corrugated aluminum door.  “The whole house is hurricane proof,” said Reich, “all the windows are impact resistant, and the front and back of the house with the most windows can be easily covered.”

The doors are of his design.  He was trying to think of an easy solution to protect the windows in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm with out having to round the house bolting on planks or special and expensive shutters.  They have rollers on the bottom and glide on sliders that secure the door on the top.  On each side, there is a slide-bolt to keep it in place as the wind picks up.

_mg_6299_2wtmkThat same corrugated aluminum paneling adorns various other parts of the exterior finish.

Reich’s family has deep roots in Laguna Beach.  Having owned property in that area for years, his wife has ties to Laguna Beach from 1938.  This modern cottage is built on a ‘half-lot’ sized 50×65.

For years he had wanted to build something on this lot, and finally, in July 2007, his dream had become a reality with the permits being approved.

_mg_6294_2wtmkHe’d always wanted something modern, utilitarian, efficient and awesome looking.  The end result is a modern cottage constructed of Transconsteel planks with bare concrete floor, exposed wood cabinets, high ceilings, and very tall walls.

“The whole house is an igloo,” said Reich.  “Insuring was odd at first because the house is so resistant to everything the agent we were working with almost didn’t know how to handle it, our premium ended up being less than $750 a year.”  The house is hurricane, mold and termite proof with the only wood being in the trim work.

_mg_6260_2wtmkThe Transconsteel planks consist of a steel frame filled with polystyrene foam.  The outside is covered in stucco and the inside is sheet-rocked. The whole house was dried in in a week with the help of 5 guys and is held together with over 26,000 stainless steel screws.

Riech’s goal, along with his wife’s was to create an ultra modern look, hanging track halogens and a ceiling fan from an exposed steel beam in the main living area accented by an exposed a/c and heating duct.

_mg_6267_2wtmkAll the furnishings were purchased from IKEA.  “I fit everything in this house in the back of my suburban and drove straight from Atlanta.”

The whole house, including everything down to the furnishings including the pool but not the land cost $170 per square foot to build.  The energy bills are usually less than $100 and is perfect for beach-goers and loungers alike.

_mg_6314_2wtmkThe wade pool in the back is lit and accompanied by modern landscaping, flat surfaces, an outside shower and a chain to guide roof run-off water into a hammered finish, rock-filled pot.

The whole house was built with efficiency in mind.  The washer/dryer unit is located outside the heated and cooled space so as to iliminate heat disapation inside and keep inside cool.
