At the intersection of Thomas Drive and Magnolia Beach Road (the road that takes you to Bay Point) the new Publix has finally opened. In the mid to late 1990’s, Delchamps was the resident grocer there.
The shopping center was purchased in 2005 and renovations began early last year. The whole facade was completely redone and the spot where the Delchamps was placed was completely demolished. The Publix is brand new, from the dirt up.

Pier Park North is getting close with the interiors being fitted in many of the retailers. Old Navy should be opening in the next couple of weeks. Landscape crews are working tirelessly to finish off the landscaping with many of the retention ponds being dressed up.
The Churchwell Road CRA (Community Redevelopment Area) is pretty much done. They were painting the yellow stripes last week and painting the 127 space public parking lot yesterday. The ribbon cutting is on April 16, 2008 at 10:30 am on the new Churchwell Bridge, unless it rains, in which case it will be under a tent in the new parking lot close to Front Beach Road. The second wave of openings in Pier Park in Panama City Beach inches closer as signs for Jos. A Bank and New York Company go up. The architectural detail is definitely taking shape as crews work to get the finishing touches on the outside of the buildings. Many of the shops have been turned over to the tenants for interior fitting with stores such as Old Navy, American Eagle, Aeropostale and Borders on schedule to open by the beginning of May.

Yesterday was the ribbon cutting for the 4 new tennis courts in Frank Brown Park located behind the facilities building on the north side of the park property. According to Mayor Gayle Oberst, these are the first tennis courts they’ve built in 30 years.
Pier Park North, close to Target and behind Dillard’s and JCPenney is on schedule to open early summer. Stores such as Borders Books and Music, Hollister, Old Navy, American Eagle, Aeropostale and Journey’s will be in this location. Fresh Market will also be in this section.
More stores were announced last week in Pier Park bringing the total stores announced to 96. Almost all of the Boardwalk area is open with everything to be open by early summer.
Some of the new stores announced include Pacific Sunwear, Hana Japan, Paradise Found, Guy Harvey’s Grill, Verizon, Cost Cutters, and Boardwalk Bag’s.

Today was the grand opening of Margaritaville in Pier Park in Panama City Beach. This location is the only one in the Panhandle and has been highly anticipated, I can’t wait to eat there. Inside, there is a boat with fake scuba tanks lining the railings (like you’d see on a dive boat), a plane hanging from the ceiling, huge sails hanging from the walls with Jimmy Buffett concerts projected on them and flat screen TV’s all over with more Jimmy Buffett.

I don’t drive down Thomas Drive very often, but when I did the other day I was quite pleasantly surprised to find a new development area has been moving along quickly.
Directly across from the Navy base a new development named Coastal Palms has all-of-a-sudden come to life. The developer built a La Quinta Inn that opened I think last year, but it may have been open longer. Various out-parcels have been sold and a Brewster’s Ice Cream and Burger King have recently opened.
