Weekend Events – Halloween This Weekend

Here are this weekend’s events.  With Halloween this weekend, we have some really spooky stuff going on here, in Panama City Beach.  With things all up and down the beach, there is everything from family friendly to adult fun.

You’ve told us, and we’ve listened.  Staring next Monday, we’ll be publishing the weekend events on Monday morning, just in time for the Tuesday morning newsletter.  This will give you some more time to plan ahead!

Books Alive…Local!

For something literary, a little bit different, and a lot local, this Friday the 29th, The Bay County Public Library presents Books Alive Local!  Friday morning at 10, writers talk about romance-and mystery! Well known World War II  Writer Bruce Gamble will be here, along with Michael Lister, Marlene Womack and a host of other local authors. Saturday morning at 9 come back for conversation, sales, signings and more!

New Airport Parking Already Feeling Squeeze from Increased Traffic

Built based on estimated traffic expectations, the parking lot at the new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is already proving inadequate.  The board has already had to open up a temporary unpaved overflow parking area to ease complaints of not enough parking spaces for travelers.

Steel Magnolias Gets Laughs and a Few Tears

For a packed house at the Kaleidoscope Theatre, the cast of “Steel Magnolias”, put on a great show, conjuring a gambit of emotions from big laughs to watered eyes.  The play, directed by Martin Hendrickson, follows the relationships and gossip between a group of Louisianian women who frequent Truvy’s Beauty shop. Katelyn Patterson a sophomore at Bay High School in her first Kaleidoscope play, put on a sensational performance as Shelby, receiving a standing ovation by plays end. Blonza Layfield, a longtime performer at KT, played the absolutely hilarious Ouiser, and did so with enough comedic flair to make all the actors in the Kaleidoscope’s 40 year run proud. The staff from local restaurant Pineapple Willy’s, came out in numbers to cheer on their two fellow employees Kelton Pullen who perfectly portrayed the sassy Truvy and Michelle Ward-Eason who gave a wonderful performance as Annelle. Rounding out the stellar cast were Sue Webb (Clairee) and Renee Black (M’Lynn) who both played flawless parts.

If you haven’t seen the play, I can tell you from experience it was well done. The stage, the lighting, directing and acting came together for a show definitely worth seeing.

Weekend Events – Pier Opening, Circus, Steel Magnolias

Sunny Indian Summer weather welcomes you to take part in historic openings at beach piers, check out a circus big top, scarecrows and a jazz festival-come on down!

Piers- Grand Opening

The city and county fishing piers will hold twin celebrations Friday to mark the official completion of both structures.

First head out to Bay Countyís M.B. Miller Pier at 2 p.m. There’ll be cake! (and a fishing contest) The fishing competition begins each Friday at 5 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. on Sunday at both piers.

At Panama City Beach’s Russell-Fields Pier, beginning at 4 p.m., Scott Lindsey remembers Dan Russell and Elgin “Popeye” Fields Jr.  Hookd Pier Cafe hosts their grand opening – free food. Even more food courtesy Buffalo Wild Wings, Reggae Jís Island Grill and Back Porch Seafood & Oyster House- and live music.

If this isn’t enough fun- watch out for fireworks at BOTH piers-  8 o’clock Friday night!

FREE Tickets to Steel Magnolias, The Play

Last weekend, this weekend and next weekend Steel Magnolias is playing at the Kaleidoscope Theatre in Lynn Haven and we have two free tickets that will go to one lucky winner.  We’ve been sitting on these tickets all week, but this is the first chance I’ve had to get them up here.  So, we’ll do the drawing on Wednesday of next week, you can pick up the tickets after that for next weekend’s performance.

So, like other contests, all you have to do to be considered an entrant is post a comment in the comment section below.  That’s it!  There is no entry form or anything fancy. . .  just post a comment and you’ll be considered an entrant to this contest.

Cole Bros Circus Here THIS WEEKEND

The tent is pitched, elephants on call and a huge white people canon is standing by ready to entertain this weekend at Frank Brown Park.  Normally this circus sets up at the Panama City mall, but this year, they’ve come to the beach.

Friday: 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm

Saturday: 1:30 pm, 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm

Sunday: 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm

The tent seats around 2000 with acts like the Globe of Death and the Human Cannonball set to dazzle you and your kids this weekend.  Have fun!

The BP Effect series, so far, has been a blast to write.  I’ve had the opportunity to meet tons of great people and get a real feel for how dynamic this incident was and how broad-ranging the effects have and continue to be.  This is the fourth article in the series and today I’m talking about a business that has had, arguably, one of the most literal direct impacts from the BP Deepwater Horizon Gulf oil spill.  Captain Anderson’s Marina’s business IS the water.  They have four sources of revenue, all of them are directly and indirectly tied to the Gulf of Mexico.  But first, I want to clear some stuff up.  And, rather than rant on here, click here to read about what caused this summer’s economic disaster in Panama City Beach.

With The BP Effect article series, I keep seeing a resounding theme of comments, and I wanted to clear something up.

The cause of the “disaster” part of this whole incident was two fold and without both of them, there would have been no “disaster” here in Panama City Beach.  The word “disaster” in terms of how Panama City Beach was effected relates not to how much oil was on the beach (because there was practically no product EVER reported on our beaches), but to how our area was effected ECONOMICALLY.  The first was the actual BP oil spill.  Had that not happened, the second wouldn’t have been a factor.

VIDEO: Symphonic Jubilation A Dazzling Event

If you missed Panama City Pops Orchestra’s opening concert you missed on of the most uplifting and awe-inspiring performances of the year. Highly acclaimed classical pianist Louis Stewart exhilarated an audience of 750 with a rendition of Rhapsody in Blue and the orchestra played Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty Waltz”, “Clair De Lune” as well as new pieces by renowned composer, Jack M. Jarrett who was in attendance.
