New Airport Set to Triple Numbers 2011

This is the first article in a series that explores 2011 Tourism Predictions for Panama City Beach.

Spring is right around the corner, and along with the knowledge of the coming season, we’re finding that our town is divided into three parts. The Optimists, The Pessimists and The Realists.

At times, it looks as though the Realists Team and the Optimists Team are on the same page, leaving the Pessimists to bemoan, well – everything.

For the most part, the Panama City Beach community is fanning those beginning sparks of excitement, while remaining optimistically cautious, over the vast potential of the 2011 tourism season.

Instead of sitting around speculating any longer, we decided to check in with some of PCB’s seasoned pro’s, those business savvy locals, who’ve been through this whole tourism thing a time or two.

Spring Break Numbers – By the Week

This year for spring break, the Tourist Development Council (TDC) is marketing specifically to students based on geographic relevancy, based on whether it’s realistic to assume they’d actually come to our part of the country for Spring Break.  Markets targeted are the Southeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Southwest.

Here are the numbers broken down.

TDC Ramping Up for Spring Break 2011

In yesterday’s TDC Marketing Committee officials were all but applauding creative ways to cater to our college friends that spend so much money on our beaches every year.  Tourism Director and CEO, Dan Rowe underscored the importance of having a strong spring season in light of last summer’s perilous dip in tourism revenue; this is crucial to be sure that we can recover from any damage to our brand and image from the oil spill that barely touched our shores.  Spring Break 2011 is poised to be the best spring season we’ve ever had.

Major Improvements To Bay Point Invitational

The Bay Point Invitational Billfish Tournament is hosted each July at Bay Point Marina in Panama City, FL.  Since it’s inception in 1984, the Invitational has donated over $1 million back to the local community, with a focus on children’s charities.

Now in its 27th year, Bay Point remains the Gulf Coast’s only “invitation only” tournament, and brings together the top anglers on the sport fishing circuit.  Long referred to as Bay County’s “Party of the Year”, the Invitational has also established itself as the premier sporting event on the Gulf of Mexico and is home to the first and second largest blue marlin ever weighed in the state of Florida.

Something for the Snowbirds

Each year as the birds fly South for the winter, residents of Canada and the Northern-United States make their way to the beaches of Panama City Beach as well.  PCB has grown accustomed to these seasonal visitors who have been deemed “Snowbirds.”  To continue enticing snowbirds to travel to the white-sand shores and emerald coast Panama City Beach offers many great deals as well as many events and activities.

New Airport STOMPS Old Airport Numbers [REPORT]

Northwest Florida International Airport is always a fun topic. Everyone loves to talk about it, read about it and quote words like “projected passenger travel” and “estimated” while throwing numbers around so fast, that even Superman is starting to look a little windburned.

While numbers and statistics are a necessary evil in the realm of progress, reports and city planning, I’m the kind of person who lives life in the blunt lane, so instead of telling me percentages, I need to know how these numbers translate into simple Good Move/Bad Move terms.

On the off chance, that you, too, might be this kind of person, let me translate the newest numbers from our lovely Northwest Florida International Airport.
